Ray Chavez, the oldest U.S. military survivor of the Dec. 7, 1941, attack on Pearl Harbor that plunged the United States into World War II, died Wednesday. He was 106.

Chavez, who had been battling pneumonia, died in his sleep in the San Diego suburb of Poway, his daughter, Kathleen Chavez, told The Associated Press.

As recently as last May he had traveled to Washington, D.C., where he was honored on Memorial Day by President Donald Trump. The White House tweeted a statement after his death: "We were honored to host him at the White House earlier this year. Thank you for your service to our great nation, Ray!"

Daniel Martinez, chief historian for the National Park Service at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, confirmed Wednesday that Chavez was the oldest survivor of the attack that killed 2,335 U.S. military personnel and 68 civilians.

I knew a couple WWI gets. Old guy named John was a neighbor. He told me of the 40 and 8 transport train cars. 40 men or 8 horses.

My brother has an old bugle. It belonged to my grandmas second husband who was a bugler in the army. I assume wwi.

My son has a knife my uncle gave him. His grandfather carried it in the Spanish American War.

It’s neat to have such history

It used to be that when we had family reunions almost every male was a veteran. Uncles, great uncles, cousins, father, grandfathers etc. Now among almost the same number of immediate family members, only 4 of us served.

Have You noticed that there is little to no mention of December 7th being Pearl Harbor Day over the last 5+ years ?

Now it’s called Medicare Enrollment Ends Day...

One of the Guys I worked with at the Parts Store still had His Fathers oil soaked Uniform from when He abandoned Ship and swam to Shore. They kept it in a Big Tin like popcorn or potato chips would come in.
