There was a spot near Long Beach, Cal, that we called ‘Ray Bay’ that was infested with them. I believe they dragged it with nets to clear them out or at least reduce their numbers. We were told to shuffle our feet to avoid stepping on themwhich they tended to resent. That said, the California rays were much less venomous than the ones in Australiawhere everything tries to kill you.
