WEEKLY GARDEN THREAD NOV. 16, 2018
freerepublic | NOV. 16, 2018 | greeneyes

Posted on 11/16/2018 6:45:04 PM PST by greeneyes

he Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds.

From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.

This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks. No matter what, you won’t be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked.

It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table(recipes)preserving, good living - there is no telling where it will go and... that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us!

NOTE: This is a once a week ping list. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest are welcomed any time-and don't have to be about gardening.

I can’t get a decent bell pepper off a plant to save my soul. What’s the secret. I stopped planting them. I live in Oregon near Portland.

I love to eat fried green tomatoes. Tried them after watching the movie.

A bell pepper plant does not seem to pollinate itself. What I dis was to go along the pepper patch and, using just a watercolor painting brush, transferred pollen from all the plants to its fellows. Then, Voila! A rich crop of bell peppers fpor eating abd making chili sauce. Grew a few ordinary cherry-type hot peppers for seasoning the chili sauce and for making regular chili with tomatoes, red beans, some garlic and onions, and ground venison. Spell it with about seven "m"s

Didn't have much luck with lima beans, though. Never took the time to find their secrets.

However, if you plant hills of summer squash or zucchini. always put a few sacrificial radish seeds with the squash seeds. The radish leaves come first. The bugs greatly prefer the radish leaves, leaving the new squash plant leaves alone. By the time the radishes have petered out, the squash leaves are so well established that all the bugs in the garden can't hurt them.

Maybe that's what I should have done with the limas.

WOW! Thank you so much! I would have never figured the bell peppers out!

I get good yield on my zucchini, acorn squash and pumpkins.

I’m no expert, L; just some things that seemed to work.

I’m not fond of them. My Mom loved them. So I usually just let the green ones ripen and eat when ripe.

I am surprised no one has known yet. When I try to identify something I type in the description on google and after the search page loads, I click on Images. Much faster to scroll through hundred of pictures and I usually find what I am looking for quickly. Maybe you already knew that. Good luck.

I just went back to look at your pictures. I am stretching them out as big as I can. Noticed the arrangement on the buffet actually shows something that might be seed heads along the stalk. Could be wheat straw, found this picture compared to the buffet arrangement looks likely. Wheat straw is very rigid when dried too.

Beats me. It depends on the warming in the next week or two, for me.

That could be what they are......after checking grasses etc. that is the conclusion I’ve arrived at.

Thanks

Great. I’m going to take those pictures down now, don’t really want to leave them up on FR.
