Schools and tourist attractions across the San Francisco Bay Area were shut Friday and residents were urged to remain indoors as smoke from Californias deadliest ever wildfire a three-hour drive away produced air quality levels worse than in polluted megacities in South Asia.
The closures came as the number of people missing from the giant Camp Fire, which has devoured an area roughly the size of Chicago since it broke out last week, soared to more than 600, with 63 confirmed dead.
President Donald Trump is set to visit the tinder-dry state on Saturday to meet victims of the inferno, which has laid waste to the town of Paradise at the northern foothills of the Sierra Nevada mountains, destroying around 10,000 homes.
Some 180 miles (290 kilometers) to the southwest, San Francisco ordered all public schools shut and its iconic cable cars returned to their stations as the Air Quality Index soared to 213, comparable to Dhaka, Bangladesh and worse than Kolkata, India. [ ]
Mayor London Breed announced that public buses would be free for the day in order to ensure people have access to enclosed transportation.
Photos posted on social media showed the famous Golden Gate Bridge shrouded in thick smog.

We are in it, living in San Francisco.
It doesnt seem as bad as its made out to be, but I’m not sensitive. I grew up in Manila, where we had our daily dose of Vitamin D (diesel).
San Francisco chokes...
Wouldn't be the first time.
Choke away...can I watch?
What about the whales!
Maybe their blowholes are all clogged up!
That happens a lot in San Francisco!
Save the whales!
Ever been to California? The fire icons are just representations you know. The fire areas reallly arent that big. The Central Valley is around 400 miles
Long and generally around 70 wide. For the most part we dont get fires there because
Much of it is irrigated farmland. Fires are usually in the hilly areas. In short one has nothing to do with the other
Who cares? They made their disasters.
Not in a while, I’ll admit. But, it looks like smoke along the proposed route might be commonplace.
Covers the stench of stale urine.
Between the wildfires and the stench from the human excrement (both health hazards the fault of lib/commie policies) dotting the sidewalk and streets, the noses of the San Franciscians are in a terrible bind indeed.
“...Camp Fire, which has devoured an area roughly the size of Chicago since it broke out last week, ...”
Too bad it isn’t Chicago.
Careful. There are Republicans in San Francisco. At least it's reported that there are. A few actual sightings as I recall.
It’s still way better than almost anything made now.
I love the incidental music.
This is possibly a Do it for the children politically correct gesture.
No, they don’t. They just don’t. Wake up.
It stinks!
Maybe San Fransico can sue California for the air pollution that is being created by the fires.
“Maybe their blowholes are all clogged up! That happens a lot in San Francisco!”
True, but it’s not usually due to the ash :)
