To: 2nd Amendment
If those two Black student had, in stating their aversion to History, made any references to their aversion being based upon their race, then I believe that no one could fault you for countering, "But the historical accomplishment of your race are so noteworthy!" and then enumerating some of them.

However, if the students didn't allude to their own ethnicity, and instead merely stated that they didn't like History, that it was "too hard," "no longer relevant," etc. - then a (substitute) teacher would do well to NOT inject the issue of race into the discussion.

opinion taken seriously. possibly pandering. I do recognize after being out of education for 30 years that white=black relations are the most sensitive. I will endeavor to change my behavior in the future and curb my enthusiasm for ethnic-based contributions!
