I had an unfortunate event happen to me this morning. For a semi-retirement job I decided to substitute teach. After hearing 2 black students tell me they hated history, I began to extol the rich contributions of blacks to American history. Moments later I was escorted to the office by the principal and escorted to the door. He implied I was a racist and we do not single out black students in our school. The parents of the students are coming in to support the students. and I will be blacklisted from subbing in county schools.I learned firsthand the sensitivity of race in American Schools and how Politically Correct educators must be in government schools.
Imagine their reaction when they learn African tribes would capture other tribes and then enslave them....long before Europeans showed up on the continent.
Just a bit of humble not an attorney advice. Defend yourself! I do not know what your contract read but the school must go by the written terms of your contract. Now even if it states that you can be dismissed without cause blah, blah.. I believe it is essential that you fight to keep your reputation.
The place to start would be to consult an attorney but that gets $$$ and may not be practical. At the very least write an affidavit recounting exactly what happened.
And no your are not a racist.
Cogito, ergo sum.
If you’re white you’re racist by definition.
Time for whites to start fighting back and defend their interests.
Racism, or the lack thereof, is so sensitive a question because it cannot be discussed openly and honestly. Whether or not a person prefers to mingle and marry people of their own race or culture should not be seen as a reflection of their character or decency.
The test should be do we treat all humans with same amount of respect WHENEVER we make contact. I have literally hired hundreds of whites, blacks, browns and others over the last 30 years. I never paid any of those PEOPLE differently, or treated them differently based on their appearance. This is the true test.
I am a lifelong conservative and I failed at trying to e a liberal. I can’t succeed either way. Fron now on I will not single out any minority stukdent. Even if they are doing cartwheels in class, grabbing eacthothers crotch, cussing out the teacher or kneeling for the flag!
I’d look for substitute teaching jobs at private schools if I were you. It’s no longer what you say or do, but what some protected class member says you said or did.
You need to “flip the script”
It is the Principle who is racist for preventing you from teaching about black history. Contact some news agency. File a complaint. Get some parents riled up.
Are you ready for a fight? Ready for publicity?
You can sue them. There is one thing the mindless PC thugs of academia hate more than “racism” and that’s being involved in legal disputes.
From what you said, I believe you can win in the court of public opinion, and can easily squeeze them for some $$$
I think that you can only bring it up during Black History month.
Perhaps the true solution is to shrug your shoulders and not care if you’re called a racist. If more people did that the “race card” would disappear. Frauds like Zero, Sharpton, Abrams, Gillum, Jackson (Is he even still alive? He has been very quite!), etc. would have no leverage over you. One could even practice MLKs dream of using individual character as your guide.
I don’t think you’re a racist and it’s a ridiculous response, but you did fall into the liberal trap. Blacks shouldn’t be needing to hear about “the contributions of blacks” to get excited about history (presumably American history). We’re Americans, and we should either enjoy the greatness of American history as a whole for its own sake or not.
point taken
No, you’re not a racist. You’re someone who tried to teach a generation that has been taught racism is whatever they decide it is.
You’re brave for trying but we’re apparently beyond the point where truth is teachable.
Probably.
Most people are.
I think you took your job too seriously. Follow the instructions left by the regular teacher and baby sit. Never try to actually teach.
No, you were just trying to inspire learning in students. In other words, teach. Your intention was pure, and those who were looking for a reason, any reason, to lash out twisted it. It is their hobby.
I’m not sure teaching is allowed anymore. It is more important that the little darlings feeeeel good about things than actually intake any useful information and think critically about it.
I have heard some stories from teachers, and the schools now cater to the children and their parents. They quake in fear of them, actually.
The mistake you made was you thought you were supposed to interact with the students. Nowadays you just stand up front and spout common core.
I admit I’ve got some weird ideas. I am fascinated by different ethnic groups and their contribution to American society. I absolutely believe that no one group has moral superiority over another. I firmly believe that God created all of us in His image. I love to point out contributions by Italians, Greeks, Poles Asians, etc. I just found out in a bitter way that once you mention African-Americans(formerly Blacks) you are in for a lot of controversy. I believe that the
great Grey Blanket” of censorship has descended on America and we probably need to got to TASS for more truthful news!
Thanks Georgia girl! This happened in a Georgia school that I will not mention.
