I don’t think you’re a racist and it’s a ridiculous response, but you did fall into the liberal trap. Blacks shouldn’t be needing to hear about “the contributions of blacks” to get excited about history (presumably American history). We’re Americans, and we should either enjoy the greatness of American history as a whole for its own sake or not.

Very true. I am curious how much class time was wasted while you tried to convince the two no-counts of the relevance of history to their lives? You can almost be sure such challenges to a teacher is nothing new to them. It is great that you care and want them to see the history is something they should connect with. But what they care about is not having to do any work in class. Because they know very well the school will graduate them unless they fail every class. The time they spend in the school is not about learning. It is about warehousing them so they are not out making trouble.
