An iconic 1972 painting by British artist David Hockney soared to $90.3million at Christie's on Thursday, smashing the record for the highest price ever paid at auction for a work by a living artist. With Christie's commission, Portrait of an Artist (Pool with Two Figures), surpassed the auction house's pre-sale estimate of about $80million, following a bidding war between two determined would-be buyers once the work hit $70million. The previous record for a work by a living artist was held by Jeff Koons' sculpture Balloon Dog, which sold for $58.4million in 2013. Hockney's previous auction record was $28.4million.

I really don’t get the idea of paying millions of dollars for classic artworks, when you can just as easily get nice paintings for $60 to hang on walls.
It would’na hang at my place nor any place I’d care to go. Proves the old saying that “some people have more money than sense”.
It’s how the elite move and launder money.
I thought it was the first person to come across a drowning victim in his pool.
The background valley image looks nice. Would make a nice 1000 piece puzzle.
It is absolutely remarkable that work as technically immature as this has any value at all. There are living artists who have no fame whose work challenges the Masters. This particular painting demonstrates that art is, indeed, symbolism, by portraying effete androgynous life.
It’s hard for me to believe that a work like this will be valued at all in 300 years.
Or get a facsimile of the famous art. I have a Mark Rothko knock off in my living room and it cost me only $80 and looks like the real thing.
Concur. Looks really gay.
I call the masterpiece “Underwear swimming at David Spades”
Its not my taste, but he gets half credit for creating a painting where people are depicted as recognizably human. It at least isn’t more abstract, symbolic BS.
The "ah-h-ht wuh-h-hld" is a strange and frequently creepy place with a byzantine pecking order; never drop a bar of soap if you happen to get thrown in it.
Yup.
Dirty Money - buy -> Art Work - sell -> "Clean" Money
It was his butt-boy.
I never really thought of that before, but that makes more sense than everything I have been able to conjure up.
That, and these people really are deranged. It mentioned a sculpture that sold for 50 million dollars called “Balloon Dog”, so I had to look that up.
Sheesh. After reading your post, then seeing THAT, I had to say “Well, bigtoona is spot on there.”
One look at the picture of the "artist" they had at the website completely confirmed that.
Looks like a screen grab from a cheap video game.
The artist is openly gay.
Aint noone got the pixur?
“homoerotic”
I agree. Man in pool with teenager/boy watching makes me think a member of nambla was the purchaser. Also believe the the two tall background trees are symbolic.
