I have a perplexion. I need to move my lovely Windows 7 to a new laptop running the evil Windows 10. There are all sort of solutions claiming to be the easiest quickest fastus (sic) way to migrate to the new machine.
I could rack my brain and make a large partition on the new machine and load a bootable system image, Leaving space for maybe a linux dist for the other.
Who has done similar and what software did you use?
Which one did you get?
Not sure about migrating to a new box, but I’ve used Acronis to move to new HDs without any problems, other than having to reregister Windows. I’m assuming it’s the HD serial which gets attached to your copy of windows. You will have to reregister each time you switch out the drive.
HDs are cheap and easy to replace. Buy a spare and copy your current windows 7 HD to it and use it in the new box while saving the HD with Windows 10 for future use.
I’m running 5 boxes with Windows 7. I’ve got Acronis running on 3 of them. I use acronis for daily backups, and for backups of multiple apple and android devices.
Get a set of cables which allows you to access a HD externally via a USB port. You can find these at Amazon.
Check YouTube for videos of how to do it.
Thinking about it, I have swapped operating HDs from one box to another. The main issue, IIRC, was the need to update drivers for the new hardware.
Hope that helps.
I have TWO Win 7 laptops and using one now. The best. I just dont want to migrate to W10 and our office OS are all W10 until next year when no more upgrades LOL
But I am interested how to do it. Our Windows expert Freeper dayglored is the Man to talk to...join up with his ping list or PM the dude..

Windows 10 is far more secure and stable. For the love of God just use it... We have over 300k installs now and it is unequivocally better than 7 not to mention 8.
I am not sure if you forgot the sarcasm tag? You can download the Windows 7 installation disc ISO image file from Microsoft for free.

Then you can purchase an “official Windows 7 key” from numerous sellers with good feedback on eBay for just a few dollars. I know absolutely nothing about the following seller, but here is an example link.
I have purchased a dozen or more licenses for various Windows versions over the years through eBay to use in virtual machines. I do not know the source of the licenses or their actual origins, but I have never had any difficulties with them if they were purchased from a seller with a lot of good feedback.
You can use these licenses in virtual machine, but it is almost a complete waste of time to try and get Windows 7 to work properly in a clean install on a new laptop with a 7th or 8th generation Intel core processor. It doesn't matter whether you want to use a 32 or 64 bit version. This is because Intel has not yet and may never release the drivers necessary. I do not know which AMD processors have the necessary drivers.
I like that the warranty is doubled. :)
We have two of this exact laptop from Costco... We bought them both last year on sale for $599. They have been good laptops; the 8th generation portable Core i5 has twice as many processors and is approximately twice as fast as the 7th generation version. It is considerably faster in almost every situation than the 7th generation portable core i7. The 2GB AMD GPU is more of an advertising ploy. The GPU built into the core processor is about as fast in most applications.
It would be a bad idea to purchase this laptop right now. This one has been available for almost a year now. A newer model will be available very soon from Costco.
I am sorry we bought them either late 2017 or early 2018... I do not have the receipt in front of me.
.
Of course you can download the ISO, but you still need a valid installation key. It is interesting that the cheap eBay installation keys work. I wonder where they come from.
I stopped buying software on eBay a long time ago after twice paying for what I thought were licensed versions of programs, that were actually fraudulent. I complained to eBay, and the vendor was back in business under another name in a few days selling the same illegal software at the same prices.
You are right about Win 7 being incompatible with the latest Intel processors.
Win 7 is also not fully supported in the latest AMD processors, though there are work-arounds:

Thanks again.
I retract my “but you can do it” in post #19. You probably cannot do it if your laptop has a new generation CPU.
My biggest problem with W10 is that I can no longer run my 2003 version of MS Office. Buying a current version costs as much as the laptop itself.
Push it all into “The Cloud” Grasshopper.
It can handle all things.
I’ve purchased keys from vendors on Ebay & Amazon only to have MS rejected the key after a period of time.
Until the internet is down, or your files are eventually hacked. Big storage = big target.
Thats a good deal. Im going to get a laptop from Costco before Christmas. Im looking at a couple 15.4 screens with a SSD.
You can buy the the student and home office version at Costco for under $150.
