As we approach the midterm elections, the Nuremberg-like atmosphere of Donald Trump rallies plus his flagrant abuses of power terrify his critics. They raise the question: Is Donald Trump a fascist?

There are two matters of fact regarding Donald Trump that are irrefutable. The first is that he is not a conservative but is, in fact, the direct adversary of all the core beliefs of Ronald Reagan. The second is that in terms of his politics, that is to say, his methods of obtaining and maintaining power, Trump has been a practitioner of both fascistic strategy and tactics.

Ronald Reagan was a follower of Edmund Burke, who deemed the preservation and respect for institutions as essential for the preservation of orderly democratic government. Trump, the anti-Ronald Reagan is on a mission to destroy our leading institutions, including the independence of the FBI and the Justice Department and the very existence of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

Reagan was a follower of Adam Smith, who believed in free markets and free trade. Donald Trump is a foe of free trade, an advocate of tariffs and a leader of trade wars.

Not exactly the best method to try to establish one's conservative credentials. The only reason Bush was remotely tolerable to conservatives was that his last name wasn't Gore or Kerry.

Lol...he says that like it's some sort of irrefutable proof of his conservative creds. The Bush wing of the GOP would have us all believe that globalism = conservatism. Their game of deception is over, and they know it. Hence, we've been hearing the pathetic cries if a dying breed almost every day now. Steinberg's screed is just the latest.

Not really clever, since “Nuremberg” was the place where the trials were held, and not particulary noteworthy as a hotbed or birthplace of the socialist nazi organization in Germany.

You could add to your comments that the Nazis had a total disrespect for national borders. There were no issues that required them to invade the Netherlands in 1940--a war with France was not a legitimate excuse; --nor for the Nazi Quisling surrendering Norwegian sovereignty to the German Socialists.

One could list many examples of their total disrespect for the very concept of a nation, starting with Austria & Checkloslovakia in 1938.

Our so-called “leading institutions” have become irreparably corrupt. They need to be dissolved and rebuilt.

Swineberg needs to read this little piece from 7/4/1776:

The long train of abuses we have experienced in my lifetime FAR exceeds those of the American colonies. A second Revolution is justified. Donald Trump is not advocating this. He is the LAST and FINAL hope of the left (no, not the right) to AVOID armed conflict because many of us who voted for President Trump will NEVER submit to the tyranny of the left.

We are not going to allow the made-up rights of abortion and homosexual sex to trample the real, God-given rights of free speech and freedom or religion and other first and second amendment rights.

America will either accept President Trump as an olive branch of peace based on freedom, or America will have WAR.

I haven’t finished reading the article, but he has it exactly backwards. Just look at the fascism definition RE freedom of the press. President Trump is not against a free press.

Instead, he has railed against a paid off propaganda media posing as “press.”

Once you have that part wrong, it’s easy to get the whole thing wrong. When you call your sweet brown horse a fascist rainbow unicorn, you start by calling him rainbow colored. Once people buy that, you add the horn into your description. At that point, of course you can add fascist! Or homophobic! Whatever!

It is just a phrase they throw out to signify "bad".
