Chess is a very interesting game. But as you noted, it can be frustrating for a beginner. What you need is an electronic game that allows you to handicap the computer opponent.

I had one like that (forget the name). You could set up the game so that the computer had, say, no queen. And if you still got beat (as I did at first), maybe take away the computer’s knights too.

I found that to be a fun way to learn. Reading a bunch of books, that’s for players who are more serious than I.

I’m not quite following your moves there. But when playing King of the Hill, the king can still be checked and checkmated the standard way.

There are numerous chess commentators who will cover the match well, but I can highly recommend Agadmator, who has earned nearly 300,000 subscribers to-date. As a prelude to the coming battle, he's just finished analyzing each of the 21 games of 1972's Fischer/Spassky championship. (I'd suggest ignoring his "How I Tricked an International Master" at the top of his page as not being representative of his talent.)

You'll note that people donate to him but there is no requirement for doing so--they simply want to show their appreciation of his efforts.

No need to buy any game now. lichess.org let’s you play pre-made puzzles and games against computer (different levels) and other human players. I play it every day but I’m no good at it.

Easy. I'm white. e4, Nf3, Bb5, O-O, Kh1. What's black's defense?

He said move King to one of the four center squares, not castle and tuck away to safety ! Plus you made four consecutive moves.. not allowed. Black's response ..

1. e4 e5

2. Nf3 Nc6

3. Bb5 a6

4. 0-0 a6xb5 (haha ! )

5. Kh1 Nf6

Chess is harder to learn, but neither game is more difficult... the only thing that determines difficulty is the strength of the opponent.

I have a 7 or 8 percent success rate against the version in Windows 7.

My rate of going to a draw is about 45 percent.

Carlsen wins the best of 4 rapid tie-break 3-0 after 12 draws in the classical time control games.
