People leaving church in 1902 (original video speed corrected)

This is a congregation leaving St. James Church in Hull, England in 1902. A rare view right into the turn of the century (most of the films from this time are in extremely murky condition). Set at a natural speed with some added sound ambience to give it the feel of a looking through a time

regrettably, both self-respect (as can be seen by their attire) and respect for our Creator (at least in some churches and synagogues).... have gone far downhill

Some of those boys probably died in WW1.

That’s extremely good video quality for that far back. Amazing.

The church was likely Church of England (long before they went nuts) and the congregants probably a mix from the respectable middle class and upper class gentry. But even a working class parish would have seen people showing some self respect in their manner of dress. One interesting observation about the period is that, at least with men, one could often identify what social class they came from based on the type of hat they wore. Bowlers mark out middle class men, tradesman, middle rank businessmen and professionals. The guys with the toppers are gentlemen, defined in those as days not just by their manners and etiquette which the middle class also rigorously enforced, but also by possessing a safe income that allowed them to live a life of leisure. Often with more than one home and enough domestics to attend to all of their needs and every comfort.

You can see these were tough people—dressed in their Sunday best. Glad they can’t see what we have done to the world they left us. They would kick our Arses—even the girls.

It is highly doubtful that was a working class church.

Interesting. A couple of those people might have lived until the 2000s, one or two might have lived in the 1700s.

Few people leave as families. The men and women (and boys and girls) seem to be with each other on the way out.

Doubtful. Even a healthy centenarian would be kept home on what appears to be a cool, brisk day. Primitive HVAC (if any) in the carriages.

The boys seem to be fascinated by the photographer taking the picture, the girls are oblivious to it. All the churchgoers are so fashionable!

They dress beautifully. Quite a difference from the getup worn in churches now.

I’d make a killing selling hats back then. Everybody wore one.

><

I’m sure. There were 744,000 British deaths in WW I. Over twice the number they lost in WW II.
