regrettably, both self-respect (as can be seen by their attire) and respect for our Creator (at least in some churches and synagogues).... have gone far downhill
Some of those boys probably died in WW1.
bkmk
That’s extremely good video quality for that far back. Amazing.
Interesting. A couple of those people might have lived until the 2000s, one or two might have lived in the 1700s.
Few people leave as families. The men and women (and boys and girls) seem to be with each other on the way out.
The boys seem to be fascinated by the photographer taking the picture, the girls are oblivious to it. All the churchgoers are so fashionable!
Amazing all those hats.
They dress beautifully. Quite a difference from the getup worn in churches now.
Id make a killing selling hats back then. Everybody wore one.
Obesity wasn’t a problem.
And....Each is so beautiful dressed and handsomely attired.
Those people all walked above the earth and now people are walking over them. Did they make the right choice concerning Jesus Christ when they were alive? Did they all go to church to meet with the risen Saviour as Blood-washed, Blood-bought Bible-believing Christians—or did they merely go to church week after week because they saw it as their familial duties.
How many of these people are today rejoicing and living life to its fullest in the presence of their Saviour in heaven, and how many of them simply neglected to do anything about the offer to come to Christ and be saved.
Sad, really, to spend a lifetime in church and then spend an eternity in hell.
Thank you for posting. Love the hats in men and women.
Incredible!!
Funny to see some of them look into the camera lens....one boy even trying to ‘stall’ to get more face time :-)
Also....I noticed that even the elderly were in terrific shape....not overweight and able to easily take the steps down, to the walkway.
Nothing like what you see in America (and England), today. Older folks mostly (NOT all!!) seem to be hunched over, limping and slow stepping. Not able to take a simple step down, with the ease that these fine folks were able to.
I was struck by how fancy everybody was dressed. They would have been horrified to see how many dress for church these days - flip flops, t-shirts, men unshaven, etc.
Towards the end, you could see a horse and carriage drive by. Also, towards the end of the video, you see a boy who appears to be somewhat lame. He took small mincing steps, stood still a couple of times as other children ran around him and finally moved out of the picture. He was all alone.
This was almost certainly an upper class group of people.
The coming World Wars would devastate this society. A very large percentage Europe's best men were killed off in those wars. This in large part allowed the United States to emerge as the world's greatest power as we were comparatively unscathed. The United States would have achieved dominance anyhow but the World Wars hastened that along considerably.
The comments on youtube from Europeans are depressing. They are almost COMPLETELY Godless. They so freelyband predictably scoff at religion with vitriol.
Thank you for the post. I and my wife spent a pleasant part of the early afternoon viewing. I wonder if any other Freepers saw the complete presentation? Superb photographs of New York- then and now. Also other studies of people of the 1858 era. A real treat.
