Why could he not get two jobs?
I may be "book smart"...but an idiot too.
It’s too bad that someone is left holding the bag on a $20,000 loan in default, but let’s look at the bright side here: It’s probably worth every penny of that money for U.S. taxpayers to get rid of a useless moron like this.
Those are, like, hard yknow.
Philosophy, pursued rigorously isn't easy. It's just worthless. I've got a BA in it, but spent the last 25 years doing radiation effects work and circuit board design.
What will he do the next time he accumulates debt? Can only flee from responsibility for so long.
His first mistake was getting a degree in comparative literature.
I suspect the timeline here has been re-arrranged.
If this guy is still getting sick, hasnt figured out the toilets, and finds elephants remarkable, he has not been in India for very long. Probably a few months. If you have been in India awhile, you start to view elephants as traffic hazards more than anything remarkable.
He would not have had time to meet, woo, and marry his Indian Professor/Princess. I would wager that they met in Colorado and got married, and he moved back to India with her when she got tired of living in Moms basement. The relationship between a young Indian woman and her mother-in-law is usually quite strained.
Also, Chad would not have been able to get a visa on his own, since he is indigent. The Indian government prohibits immigration by people who cannot demonstrate significant assets. The last thing they want is a bunch of hippy-dippy philosophy majors running around, bitching about the toilets and clogging up the Emergency Room.
Dollars to Donuts his wifes father bribes some local official to find problems with Chads visa. A few months standing in lines in various Indian government offices should be enough to convince The Chadster that Walmart really wasnt so bad, after all.
I wonder how much a philosopher makes a year..
I don't know, but for some reason the name P.T. Barnum comes to mind... :)
When I was in school, I would take any job to pay expenses.
The worst was cleaning out the Upper Division dorms at the end of the school year. You cannot imagine...
One day my buddy and I were up to our elbows in a particularly nasty garbage closet, and he turns to me and says, We must go out tonight to celebrate, because I just got my PhD in Paleontology!
She looks lovely.
The poor girl! To be saddled with such a useless husband!
They say that they will take money from social security. At 29, congress will probably raise the age to 70 and who knows under 35 year crowd. And at 29 these kids dont even have 40 quarters yet. Government is dreaming.
Two of the three people cited as examples are named Chad.
Maybe thats the problem!
He should come to Florida. Big teacher shortage. Of course you start out at 30 grand but at least you are in the states.
If you become a teacher they will forgive the debt.
Idiot with a degree
Thats true.
Well, he has warmth in the winter and shade in the summer.
Don't wind me up. Back in the 1970s, I'd almost finished my Math Masters because the state college was going to begin offering majors in academic subjects instead of just education. The faculty voted it down, and everyone who only had a few courses more to go (or had enough credits in anticipation of the change) had to take 15 hours of education courses! Colleges being in the business of keeping professors employed at student expense goes back that far.
So, he’s espousing theft...
Charming.
Want to see the cost of college go down? Stop the government backed loans to these kids. Make them or the parents put up some kind of collateral. Of course the administrators and teachers will wail about their fat paychecks going down to what they should be.
This one just wanted the college experience. He had no intention of working hard so he took the easy classes; none of which prepared him for a real job in the real world so now he feeds chickens and keeps an eye out for elephants in India.
I’m sure he is quite fulfilled. /s
The real issue is not what the student wanted but whether these students have any real agency at all, or are merely going through the motions of what they were trained to do.
People who are just barely not children anymore are being systematically conned into signing onto huge loans that are not in their interest at all. This predatory rent-seeking is the real problem.
