How our drinking water could help prevent suicide: Some researchers think putting lithium [tr]

Lithium is a potent psychiatric drug, one of the primary prescribed medications for bipolar disorder. But it’s also an element that occurs naturally all over the Earth’s crust — including in bodies of water. That means that small quantities of lithium wind up in the tap water you consume every day. Just how much is in the water varies quite a bit from place to place.

Naturally, that made researchers curious: Are places with more lithium in the water healthier, mentally? Do places with more lithium have less depression or bipolar or — most importantly of all — fewer suicides?

A 2014 review of studies concluded that the answer was yes: Four of five studies reviewed found that places with higher levels of trace lithium had lower suicide rates. And Nassir Ghaemi, the Tufts psychiatry professor who co-authored that review, argues that the effects are large. High-lithium areas, he says, have suicide rates 50 to 60 percent lower than those of low-lithium areas.

so...would there be human water and animal water or will we be pumping lithium into chickens, pork, veal and beef, too? Duck lithium anyone?

and what about informed consent? is forcing people to drink lithium water a form of internal assault? how are the lithium byproducts eliminated from reclaimed water that feeds into streams and lakes?

I think they do that already in Cocoa Beach, FL. We went there recently, and everyone we saw was unnaturally buoyant and happy.

You'd save even more lives by putting roofies in the water.

"I love her voice, but she scares me. Looks like Vampira without the fangs."

Mr G has worked with her, and that is just a stage presence. She is one of the kindest sweetest people you will ever meet. But boy howdy, can she play the piano and SING!

No!

Just attempt to keep or get our water from various mineral rich sources. Hopefully local (my town excepted). Of course with different minerals in different places, places will be prized for that resource. Maybe a water with more natural lithium is good for some things. Mineral water for bathing or drinking is prized in Europe and in some places here too. Just like the weather is better from place to place. It doesn’t all have to be the same.

He lives in Phoenix, AZ. He’s becoming a digital “jack of all trades”: engineering, mixing, production, mastering, web design, graphic design, photo/video, and social media management. He’s interning for a couple of professionally accomplished producers/mastering engineers and doing tons of self-study in multiple areas.
