Never knew about this. Pretty amazing.

I hate to say it, but this comment on the video thread did make me chuckle:

"No reason to panic folks. The captain is just hanging outside the cockpit for a bit of fresh air and we are about to crash. Please dont panic."

IIRC the pilots windscreen had just been replaced and the wrong screws were used.

There is nothing “sucking” out there in the atmosphere. A pressurized cabin is just that - a metal tube filled with high pressure. Just like the cylinder of an air pump or scuba tank. People and objects are blown out when there is a hull breach.

Well, yeah, the pilot was blown out of the cockpit a la Goldfinger, but it was the windstream at 250+ knots that kept her from pulling him back in. Wonderful save.

No need to panic!

Years ago I was on a Pan Am plane scheduled to fly from Frankfurt to West Berlin. This was before the Berlin Wall fell so Pan Am,rather than a German airline, flew that route.

As we were heading out to the runway for takeoff the pilot came on the PA and calmly made an announcement in German.Half way through the announcement the woman next to me gasped in fear and surprise. Then he made the announcement in English.

"Ladies and gentlemen,we seem to have a small problem here...we understand that there might be a bomb on board the aircraft. We will be taxiing the aircraft to a remote part of the airport at which time we'll ask you to leave the aircraft quickly and quietly".His exact words...I still remember almost 40 years later.

He was as calm as could be while making it.But the stewardesses weren't quite as calm as they shouted "schnell" (? spelling) as they just about pushed each passenger through the rear door.Having been a fan of Hogan's Heroes I knew what "schnell" meant.

Correct on the screws. They were replaced with 1 size too small screws the night before. I saw the MAYDAY Show a few weeks ago on this Flight.

The Service Tech had done the job many times before. When He went to get new hardware He didn’t have the Parts Guy lookup the parts and get them by number because the parts guy was doing something else and Tech had done the job before on other planes.

The problem was whoever put the screws in the last time used the wrong size screws so while the Tech Guy MATCHED the screws He was MATCHING to the WRONG ONES because of the prior tech using the wrong size before.
