Across the state, there have been nine recent cases of people younger than 18 years old who have been clinically diagnosed with acute flaccid myelitis.

Since 2015, there had been four cases in Illinois, according to the health department. The Minnesota Department of Health put out an alert last week, stating that six cases have been reported in children across that state over the past several weeks.

Since the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention began tracking AFM in 2014, 362 cases have been reported across the country, there have been at least 38 cases so far this year in 16 states, according to the agency’s website. Last year, one person diagnosed with AFM died, but the CDC does not know what role the illness played in the death.

A one-in-a-million disease that seems
to spike in September. With leads me
to believe it’s associated with
mosquitos. Just my opinion.

Polio is also classified as an enterovirus. Although the disease can be deadly, it, too, can affect different patients differently. Some have even suggested that there is a genetic component that makes some more susceptible than others. My cousin had six children, all in the days before the development of the vaccine. Every other child had polio, even though, obviously, they were all grew up in the same household and were exposed to much the same environment outside of their home.

Seriously? Holes? This article is about a lovely little girl in Batavia who has contracted this horrible polio-like disease...

And this is your reply? Are you a parent?

What do you know about Batavia? Obviously not much...

Batavia is a far-western xurb of Chicago...nearly 50 miles from “Chicongo.*” Not even in same county. It is a very nice/upscale community.

According to the 2008 U.S. Census Bureau estimate, the median income for a household in the city was $90,680, the median income for a family was $103,445, and the median home value was $329,80. News flash...income and home values are higher today. Some “hole” huh...

It is home to Fermi National Accelerator Lab and Aldi Foods headquarters to name 2.

It is the new “go-to” place for millennial families to live and raise families...just like the family that is dealing with this terrible disease afflicting their lovely daughter.

I don’t live in Batavia...Just setting your record straight.

*Batavia Over 93% Caucasian btw, so that dispels some of the other myths being propagated on this thread.

Bubonic plague (Yersinia pestis) is endemic in the Southwest. Annual cases are generally in the 10-15 range, but sometimes during drought conditions it will go a little higher. It is curable with antibiotics in its early stages.

Hansen's Disease (leprosy) is also curable with antibiotics. The World Health Organization provides medications at no cost to patients.

There could be a genetic susceptibility to bad results from enteroviruses, but there is definitely a difference between a robust immune system and a typical weak one.
