She says her ability to drive didn’t change when she transitioned from life as a man to life as a woman, but her insurance rates sure did.
Faith Frances asked that we use her first and middle name and omit her last name to protect her privacy.
She thought she was the victim of discrimination against transgender people. When she fought for justice, she learned she is the victim of legal discrimination all women in Michigan are subject to.
It is an issue we exposed. Car insurance companies are allowed to charge women a lot more for car insurance, simply because they are women.
Faith contacted her insurance company because she changed her legal name. She never imagined it would skyrocket her car insurance prices $970.08 - almost $1000 a year.
“I don’t know. What do they think? My breasts get in the way of driving? I don’t know,” said Faith.(snip)
“If they would put my insurance rates back where it should be, I wouldn’t have to go to the food bank,” said Faith.
When it happened she contacted Attorney General Bill Schuette’s office. She thought it was transgender discrimination.
She says she received a response from the Michigan Insurance Commissioner’s office. It explained it had nothing to do with her change of gender. Women who are born female also pay more.
It included a letter from Progressive Marathon Insurance Company. She says the letter, ironically, revealed Progressive has a very unprogressive policy.(snip)

Thanks much—that sure explains it, given that I’m used to hearing about men having the more expensive auto insurance.
Of course, transgendered any-whatevers probably have more expensive healthcare bills than either men or women...

One thing that has always struck me about people pretending to be a different sex; how unattractive they are. What might have been a modestly attractive older man turns into a truly ugly woman. The same is true for women, who are generally smaller than men and have different body proportions. You can look at them from over fifty feet away and your subconscious knows something is “wrong.” I am reminded of two different men I saw wearing dresses in Walmart. Both were substantially overweight. Both had definitely masculine proportions. One of them had forearms you could have balanced a table lamp on. They drew stares; which may have been the whole idea.

It makes getting treated at the ER fun too. I had to take my husband in because we got lightly rear-ended a week after he had neck surgery. Not enough to damage the car but it gave him quite a jolt. They had to make sure the plate and screws had not shifted.
We had two medical insurances at the time plus auto medical so it should have been covered but the auto medical said that unless there was a police accident report they would not pay.
The others said it was auto related so they did not have to pay until the auto med did.
Oh joy!
I finally paid it out of pocket so the ER was not cheated and then submitted the bill to all three and told them to fight it out.
It took four years for them to reimburse me.
Why would women pay more than men for car insurance? I know that for young drives, women pay a lot less then men.
But apparently, it is true that in many cases, older women pay more than older men. You would think this is because actuarial studies show they cost more for the insurance company.
There is some question whether that is truly the case, BUT if it wasn’t, why wouldn’t some insurance company undercut the market, call themselves the “women’s choice”, and capture that market?
It is possible that the highly regulatory nature of car insurance contributes to this, as it makes it hard for a company to charge less.
In any case, I have not been able to find ANY insurance where females pay THAT MUCH MORE than men.
Meanwhile, there was a guy in Canada who changed his identity to female in order to save $1000 a year on his car insurance.
That’s strange. Usually they charge young men more because they are in more accidents. Maybe women are catching up and drive crazier than young men.
It’s not because you are a female.

This is the first I’ve heard of women paying more for car insurance.
Shut up, dickchopper! In most states males pay more for car insurance because men and women are NOT the same. Men have testosterone, and drive like dicks, while women powder their nose, put on lipstick and talk on the damn phone while driving.
You are not a woman. You are judging yourself by what’s in your triangle area.
Note from proofreader: change all those “she” to “he”. Change “woman” to “man”. Lopping off your dicque doesn’t make you a woman.

Exactly. The mentally ill maybe should not have driving privileges to begin with. Witness Bruce Jenner in drag near the beginning of his “transition” has a twisted brain fart moment and kills a real woman on the PCH in Malibu.
Let’s take a look at those actuarial tables, shall we?
I will bet money there is a difference in accident rates between men and women. The statistics don’t lie.
This battle has likely been fought before, and when someone complains, they simply present the data and say “Here is why we charge more” and the case is closed.
I’ll bet money.
Younger people pay more too.
Doing some research, it appears that some carriers like to charge women a lot more. State Farm pretty much ignores gender after age 25 or so.
Single women do have higher accident rates — married women tend to drive less, because their husbands drive, which is really why older men have more accidents than older women.
Above age 60, it seems women have more accidents per mile then men, but men drive more than women.
People forget insurance also covers theft, and so if you live in places with higher theft rates, or where there are a lot of men driving who have more accidents, your rates will go up even though you are the same driver.
Women don’t tend to avoid accidents as well as men.
But still, it was nice to see the transgender woman admit that she was exactly the same person as she was when she was known as a he.
This was an informative article, with charts.
I will bet money the detailed actuarial tables don’t lie. Otherwise, there would have been successful lawsuits for this disparity in rates.
But there haven’t been.
