People in the Midwest that own hundreds of acres, sometimes have their own landfill since there’s no codes against it. Dig a big hole and throw your trash in their for 40 years and then cover it up and start a new one somewhere.
Could be methane gas from grandpa’s landfill.
Also, you’d be surprised how many people don’t have a proper septic system. Some people just run a pipe down into the woods.

My cousin bought a rural house that he was assured had a septic system. After doing some painting in preparation to moving in he washed the brushes out in the sink. As he was doing so he looked out the window and saw a trail of paint running down the creek behind the house.
