With The Conners slated to debut this month sans Roseanne Barr, the remaining cast members are reflecting on their new direction after Barrs firing.
It was awkward but not awkward, Laurie Metcalf, who plays Jackie Harris, told People about filming without Barr. It was right but not right, wrong but not wrong.
As the series is expected to address, Barrs character is killed off and the family is left to recover.
Any sadness that we feel over what weve lost were hopefully channeling in an honest way into the show, added Sarah Gilbert, who returned to her role as Darlene Conner and a producer on the show. And our show has always been able to deal with heavy topics, particularly for a sitcom.
Back in May, ABC swiftly canceled Roseanne after Barr, 65, posted racist tweets about Valerie Jarrett. The network called her behavior not in line with its values. Then came discussion of whether the show could return without Barr who played a pivotal role both in front of and behind the camera. Barr ultimately chose to remove herself so the show could survive.
That was a very big deal, said John Goodman, who plays Dan Conner. To give us a chance.
Goodman, 66, adds he and the remaining cast didnt want to let the series end until they were truly finished. There was a debt owed to this fictional family. Well figure out how to get through this, the family will, everybody will. We want to finish telling this story.
Of the remaining stars, Goodman appeared to have the most difficulty with the cancellation news.
I had a bad time for about a month, he recalled. And then other things started going wrong. I fell down the steps and broke a rib. My wife got sick

No need. The Cosby Show is still on TV almost every night for hours at a time.
True.
Roseanne was the talent. The rest? Nah.
Doesn’t interest me without Roseanne Bar
Hey, she could do Maxine, the Christmas Angel.
I loved Peter Falk’s Max movies.
Unfortunately, she’s no conservative, and I never watched either of her shows.
The good news for the cast is that it won’t be “awkward” for very long.
They should bring in Ted McGinley.
They are all going to sit around and pretend to be sad over Roseanne’s character dying when they all wanted her kicked off the show. Phony nonsense. I won’t watch.
I dont care what her politics are she is hysterically funny and GETS middle class Americans. Just plain good people struggling to make ends meet and all the crazy family stuff. She is really talented.
Look at the full table of hypocrite back stabbers. Typical Hollywood scum.
Glad she cleared that all up for us. I was ambivalent / unsure how I should feel, but now...
Regards,
I expect that many of the viewers will be trying to answer your first question for themselves, and after an initial flurry of interest and curiosity, The Conners won't have the ratings of its predecessor.
(I didn't watch the previous shows, and I'll probably be reading reaction threads here instead of watching the new show.)
Charlie Sheen could make it work!!
Just switch Rosie Barr with Rosie O’Donnell. I’m sure nobody will notice.
My guess is it is a massive tank.
wait till they find out there is no audience with out her...lots of people turned in originally because of her not the other cast members with maybe the exception of john Goodman.
His family can visit him in prison.
“Connors” can stick it.
