Certainly, Disney did them even worse than Lucas ever did (and I heard they had a massive falling out over the ending of Return of the Jedi where Lucas turned it into an unrealistically happy ending).

The stories and characters are still around. Disney does what most of Hollywood does nowadays: Inferior remakes.
