When Star Wars was filming, Kurtz was the approachable, practical one who would make timely decisions and resolve issues while Lucas was thumbing through Hero With A Thousand Faces and revising the script on the fly. No studio would have trusted Lucas without someone like Kurtz to make sure that budgets and schedules were met.

When I saw it in 1977, I considered Star Wars I to be the greatest movie of all time. I did’t like Star Wars II (1980), and although I liked Star Wars III better than its antecedent, it still couldn’t hold a candle to the first one.
