Republican Pete Flores defeated Democrat Pete Gallego on Tuesday night in the special election runoff for Senate District 19, a major upset in a Democratic-friendly seat with implications for the balance of power in the upper chamber.
With all precincts reporting, Flores beat Gallego by 6 percentage points in the race to replace convicted former state Sen. Carlos Uresti, D-San Antonio. Flores had 53 percent of the vote and Gallego 47 percent in unofficial returns.
Gallego conceded to Flores around 9 p.m., according to both campaigns. With the victory, Flores will become the first Hispanic Republican to serve in the Texas Senate.

That seat hadn’t lost to a Republican for 139 yrs.
Hillary won there by 2 points. Sic transit gloria.
“...That seat hadnt lost to a Republican for 139 yrs....”
Thank You President Trump!!! MAGA.
Was this an upset? Article doesn’t say what the polls predicted.
I though I read Hillary won by 12 points and only about 30% of the district is white.
Yes it was 12 points......my typo.
The district is largely latino.
A Huge Upset Victory In Texas ~
Last night, Pete Flores (R-Pleasanton) defeated former U.S. Congressman Pete Gallego (D-Alpine) [53% - 47%] in a runoff for the vacated seat of convicted felon, Carlos Uresti (D-Leavenworth). This marks the first time in the state’s history that Republicans will hold a super-majority in the Texas Senate.
It should also send a shockwave through the “Bozo” O’Rourke campaign because 68% of Senate District 19’s voters are Hispanic, and the District has a published poverty rate of 18.8%. Significantly, Flores ran on strict border control, and is pro: life, 2-A, family, energy, veterans; and, is anti-taxation.
It’s the first time in 139-years that a Republican has held the Texas District 19 Senate seat.
November just won’t get here fast enough for me.
Normally a red tide is a bad thing. This one might be extra sweet. :)
There’s a “Pete and RePete” joke in there somewhere...
The FIRST of MANY MORE TO COME....................
Uresti beat Flores 55% - 40% in 2016.
Huge shift.
“...in a runoff for the vacated seat of convicted felon, Carlos Uresti (D-Leavenworth).”
I see what you did there. Very well played.
Did our resident hand-wringers notice this race?
Yes , a big upset .
Some confirmation of the what the generic polls have been saying - the Hispanic vote is moving significantly towards the Repubs and Trump - good news - now if we can start to see some movement in the black vote......
We need to start now to build larger capacity sewage systems for all those blue floodwaters to disappear into, come Nov.
