A Russian maritime patrol aircraft with multiple personnel on board was inadvertently shot down by Syrian regime anti-aircraft artillery on Monday after the Syrians came under attack by Israeli missiles, according to a US official with knowledge of the incident The US official said the regime was actually trying to stop a barrage of Israeli missiles. A second official confirmed that Israel was responsible for the missile strikes on the Syrian regime.
The Russian state news agency TASS reported that a Russian IL-20 military aircraft with 14 personnel on board disappeared over the Mediterranean on Monday. According to TASS, the ministry of defense specified that "the mark of IL-20 went off the radars disappeared during the attack of four Israeli F-16 aircraft on Syrian targets in the province of Latakia."
The Israelis had fired multiple missiles against targets in the coastal area of Latakia where Russian has based much of its military presence, including aircraft. In an attempt to strike back against the Israelis, the Syrians launched extensive anti-aircraft fire, the official said and the Russian aircraft was hit.

Wait, wait it's one of our allies planes. We hit a Russian plane.
WE SHOT DOWN A PLANE!
Japan airlines flight 007 comes to mind.
Russian electronic stuff from the 2000's vs Israel 2018 electronic warfare stuff while playing in Israel's backyard.
Korean Air Lines 007.
Thanks for the correction! I don’t know why I made that kind of mixup.
100%
I know a lot of FReepers jest about this, but this is a seriously dangerous situation. Russia will be moved domestically to respond. Hopefully this can be smoothed over.
Unless the Israelis were jamming heavily (and thus impeding reception of IFF signals), and had their jamming aircraft sitting where the Russian plane was between them and the Syrian missiles in case the Syrians launched in "home on jam" mode.
The Israelis think they can poke the bear, and that the US will shield them from any response. At least, that's their hope...
ECM aircraft have more than one e-weapon at their disposal than a high power, static-noise jam. They can also fool the receiving radar into thinking that there are more or fewer aircraft and spoof them miles away from their actual position.
I don’t think Russia will bomb Syria over it.
