I say that's not true. I've been researching deeds in my area dating back to 1790's and found that 90% of the deeds were held by women. Rumour is that that was to make sure that the husbands would not gamble away the homestead while intoxicated.

I’m looking back into the dense fog, but there may exist a local court finding regarding a woman who was deeded her deceased husband’s property. Her argument was that she was “voting the will” of her dead husband. I believe it was around the time of Adams/Jefferson presidencies.
I have no idea how the court found.
