Serena Williams fined $17,000 for code violations at U.S. Open

The money comes out of Williams' $1.85 million in winnings as the runner-up to Osaka, whose 6-2, 6-4 victory on Saturday made her the first tennis player from Japan to win a Grand Slam singles title

In the second set's second game, Ramos warned Williams for getting coaching, which is against the rules in Grand Slam matches. She briefly disputed that ruling, saying cheating "is the one thing I've never done, ever" — although afterward, her coach, Patrick Mouratoglou, acknowledged he was trying to send Williams a signal.

A few games later, Williams received another warning, this time for smashing her racket, and that second violation automatically cost her a point, leading to more arguing.....

Under Article III, Section P of the Grand Slam Rule Book, "verbal abuse" is defined as "a statement about an official, opponent, sponsor, spectator or other person that implies dishonesty or is derogatory, insulting or otherwise abusive." The section says a player is subject to a fine up to $20,000 for each violation.

There are separate categories for coaching ("Communications of any kind, audible or visible, between a player and a coach may be construed as coaching") and for abuse of rackets or equipment.

It is not a stupid rule.

It IS a stupid rule......Why shouldn't ANY athlete in ANY event be denied coaching during whatever event they are competing in?

What advantage would a tennis player get from their coach on the sidelines that their opponent wouldn't also get from theirs?

Tennis is the only sport where chiropractors pass out their business cards outside the stadium to take care of spectators wandering out with neck injuries..........

And the Japanese winner Osaka, in traditional Japanese fashion, actually apologized for defeating the tournament favorite.........

We just watched it And that was super sad. The audience and the Open speeches ruined her celebration. Shame on them all.

You’re right. That was a disgusting display.

She may have been correct about some of the sexism, but best to deal with that much later, not RIGHT THEN on camera.

How horrible to not allow Naomi her joyful victory.

Thanks. Didn’t know that. Thought they said she was Japanese. I assumed she was Japanese only. My bad.

She did because of the money. I would have done the same. The article doesn't make that clear and from the comments many don't realize she is an American citizen and well as a Japanese

I guess either article could be right.

She’s gonna have to cut out the steroid abuse.

It’s making her bad-tempered.

The only match I watched was the one where Williams was floundering badly early in the match against in unranked nobody.

The Open stopped the match to close the stadium roof due to “rain”. There was not rain present in the stadium, the other stadium with retractable roof (which wasn’t also closed), nor any of the other tournament or practice courts.

After the 8-minute break to close the roof, Williams came back to win the match. It was clear the crowd was on her side.

After the match, she commented that the break allowed her to “gather her thoughts and refocus.”

The entire tournament was fixed, and when their chosen social justice warrior minority lost, everyone was clearly disappointed.
