As part of the $1.3-trillion budget bill approved by Congress and signed by Trump, officials approved $22.9 million for the project. That more than doubles the $10.2 million it got in the previous year's budget.
A seismic early-warning system for the West Coast has been under development for years by the USGS, the nations lead earthquake monitoring agency, but the project has remained short of funds.4
Its estimated that building a full system covering the West Coast would cost at least $38.2 million, with about $16.1 million annually to operate and maintain it.
The USGS has said it planned to begin issuing limited public alerts from the system by the end of this year, as long as funding wasnt cut. Southern California is one area where the network of seismic sensors is dense enough at present to begin early warnings.

Exactly what I was thinking. Moreover, the earthquake warning is something that may actually be of some use, unlike Moonbat's Choo-Choo Train to nobody cares.
Probably not enough time for people who are in the bathroom.
I grant you that. And also the chance for a pilot to abort a landing.

Ha! I wish. The gas shut-off valves are already available ($100?)! I just keep thinking that I should buy one!
“Just think, most dogs will give a 1 hour warning for practically nothing.”
When we lived in marvelous Marin, Ca., decades ago we had a dog which lived outside in her own house and didn’t want to come except to wake the kids up in the morning.
Our son a math genius timed her: re anticipating earthquakes:
1. About an hour before the quake hit, she would lay on the patio near the screened door and moan.
2. At about 30 minutes before the quake, she would start low howls and lay as close to the patio door as she could and growl and moan.
3.At about 15 minutes before the quake, she would scratch at the door until we let her in.
4. Once inside, she would check on the kids and come back to the family room until everyone was there.
5. Then, she got very agitated until the quake hit. She would try to get in the lap of the biggest person in the room. She weighed about 85#’s, not a delight if she
was in your lap
6. If there was just one quake, she would head for the door to check the back yard out. If more were coming, she would not leave the family room and her biggest adult buddy.
Today that dog could be worth millions for breeding future mobile earthquake warning systems.
That 3 seconds in combination with gas values that automatically close would save many lives from the fires that are prevented.
Wow, in that case I’m sure 50 or 60 billion dollars should get a 10 - 20 second notification .... hell, it’s free money.
P-waves travel fast and can provide a preliminary earthquake warning if monitored. A wide network of sensors could provide near instantaneous detection of a major quake and send an electronically transmitted alert. Ten seconds is an eternity for an automated safety system to initiate a shutdown.
Californians could gain tens of seconds warning dependent upon location. The northwest U.S. would possibly have minutes of advance notice. Two minutes head start before a quake strikes the coastline could make all the difference avoiding an accompanying tsunami.
I’ve seen my cats behave the same way, although it was an earthquake, but a deep rumbling coming from the seat of my pants. Of course by the time they heard it the smell had engulfed the room.
Spolier alert -- there will be a warning just before the election.
