Gator. com
Everything I’ve uploaded to my site already sits on my home computer. If it ever went down I’d only lose the time it took to upload my stuff again.

hostgator.com is pretty good and have some reasonably priced plans.

With whatever service provider you choose, you will need to log into your domain registrar and change the name servers to point to the new location.

Many domain registrars (such as the one already mentioned—Go Daddy) offer email and hosting services as well.

GoDaddy if you want to support pornography “beavers”. 1&1 if you just want long term, consistent support - in 7 years my domains have been down twice, for a couple of hours.

godaddy is good for domain registration, one of the best in terms of support ... but their email response has consistently been so slow for years that they’ve finally given up and simply contracted their email to microsoft ... best to get a separate service for hosting email and web and point to that services DNS servers from the godaddy registrar ... the nice thing about keeping registrar separate from hosting is that you can easily switch hosting service by simply repointing godaddy to the DNS services of your new hosting service (and of course porting your web and email) ...

at any rate, i’ve had pretty good support from bluehost.com as a hosting service over many years ...

here’s the wiki blurb on bluehost:

I’ve been using dreamhost.com for years now with no problems. Very cost effective too.

Thank you, everyone, for your advice! I knew I could rely on you all for good, honest, evaluations. I had to get up and running really fast, and I chose HostGator.com. It looks like it’s going to fit the bill perfectly.

I’ve been really impressed by the quality of their tech support, and their professionalism. I had mistakenly signed up for the wrong type of account, which didn’t allow me to host my own email. I opened a chat room with their tech support, and once they told me I had the wrong type of account, I asked if I could be reimbursed (I had paid for a whole year) and open a new account of the right type. They did so immediately without any problem, even though it meant that I would have to leave gator.com and go to hostgator.com... which is a related company, but there’s no interaction between them.

When I went to hostgator.com, it was quick and easy to get up to speed.

One thing I love is that they have BoxTrapper on their email server, which has completely resolved my spam issue. I had been receiving hundreds of spams per day, and SpamAssassin wasn’t doing much to help. I had started using MailWasher (a client-based email filter), but that was so cumbersome to keep doing. BoxTrapper instantly stopped ALL spam! It’s kind of eerie not getting so much email to have to sort through, looking for the ones I want. It’s amazing.

So I think HostGator was a good choice for me. Thanks to everyone, though, for all your suggestions.
