A planned hunt of grizzly bears near Yellowstone National Park has trophy hunters and environmentalists on edge as a federal judge may rule as early as Thursday if the planned hunt can still go forward.
U.S. District Judge Dana Christensen is set to hear arguments in six lawsuits brought by environmental groups against a planned grizzly bear hunt that hunters say they should be allowed to participate in.
About 700 grizzlies living in and around Yellowstone National Park lost their protected status last year when they were removed from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service's threatened species list.
Ranchers and officials in the region are hopeful that lifting protections will allow the state to better address grizzly attacks on livestock that have grown more frequent as the population has grown and spread into agricultural areas.

Depends on the state. Using bait and dogs for bear hunting in Montana, Oregon, Washington and parts of Wyoming is illegal, there’s probably others too.
The wife and I watched that a few months ago and enjoyed it, it’s getting harder and harder to find a decent flick to watch now days.
Here in Wisconsin they use bear bait which is sugary gooey stuff including old doughnuts etc. They then chase these poor creatures on ATV’s with loud hounds each with a GPS collar until the bear is up a tree and then a shot to the head. I get in trouble saying this in mixed company, but I think Wisconsin bear hunters are pussies.
I hear you and have read and seen some shows on it, I don’t consider that hunting either.
Very good movie. I saw a few months ago .
I am sure the grizzly hunt well be a spot and stalk adventure.
Grizzlies at yellowstone have been out of control for many years with overpopulation.
I think they were only going to give tags for 12 or so bears.
Next up will be the ecoterrorists claiming grizzlies are endangered, when the real truth is that everything around them is about to become endangered from feeding too many predators.
We only have black bears though.
Some black bears are hunted with hounds and or bait. Don’t like it, don’t hunt there. Vote with your pocket book. The laws of each state dictate how when and where critters can be hunted and taken. If one thinks certain methods are not acceptable or even ethical for them, but whereas the people of a state deems it a traditional accepted way of pursuit, so be it.
Most blacks and probably all brown bears are hunted by spot and stalk methods or, in the case of woods hunting in timber, via “a la cart”- being in the right place at the right time when a bear walks by. Recently my older brother shot a 375 lb black boar in Broome county NY, he was in a ground blind deer hunting with his Savage 99 in 250, 87 grn Nosler, one shot stop at 23 yards, he’s like that. Me, I hunt bears with my 416 Rigby.
It’s “near Yellowstone National Park” not in it. Bears don’t know about lines on maps.
You’re correct, my mistake...Thanks.
I guess I’ve had a few gay grizzlies in my garbage in the past then...
Ha! Funny!
I think a little first-hand experience can be very instructive. :)
Unfortunately when I ruff grouse hunt, I run across these yahoos. I get what you are saying, it’s still my opinion and I stand by it.
Hard-core left-wing judge appointed by Obama. He took the place of a Leftist bilious pig named Molloy who did more to burn down the forests of the West than Zeus himself might have tried.
This griz hunt will never happen.
Well, let me ask - do you hunt with a ‘bird gun” or a common pump or semi? If you carry an Elsie or a Fox or a B27 in 28 ga rather than a common 870/1300, then you may be a bit elitist to most folks you run into....
But, hey, those yahoos won’t care what you carry, but rather that you enjoy your hunt...
Hunting Ruffed Grouse, you likely follow a dog of either flushing or pointing variety- why would your dog be any better/fairer than their dog? Do you wear Filson tin cloth?
:>)
.410 pump, no dog. I am not saying I am against bear hunting, I just don’t like the method of the hunt...it is not hunting. It is similar to the Native’s up here who spear walleye during spawning....It’s lazy and not fair.
Legal is the issues. Otherwise the snti would rule for us...
