It was a late summer afternoon, Sally Dale recalled, when the boy was thrown through the fourth-floor window.
He kind of hit, and she placed both hands palm-down before her. Her right hand slapped down on the left, rebounded up a little, then landed again.
For just a moment, the room was still. Bounced? one of the many lawyers present asked. Well, I guess youd call it it was a bounce, she replied. And then he laid still.
Sally, who was speaking under oath, tried to explain it. She started again. The first thing I saw was looking up, hearing the crash of the window, and then him going down, but my eyes were still glued. She pointed up at where the broken window would have been and then she pointed at her own face and drew circles around it. That habit thing, whatever it is, that they wear, stuck out like a sore thumb.
A nun was standing at the window, Sally said. She straightened her arms out in front of her. But her hands were like that.
There were only two people in the yard, she said: Sally herself and a nun who was escorting her. In a tone that was still completely bewildered, she recalled asking, Sister?
Sister took hold of Sallys ear, turned her around, and walked her back to the other side of the yard. The nun told her she had a vivid imagination. We are going to have to do something about you, child.

Going to read that book you mention-—irony here in that Mommie Dearest herself , Joan Crawford, was one of the recipients of these children.
” And then I personally invite you to reflect on the criminal organization that covered up for child abuse and even outright murder. The Catholic church is due for a vast and intense investigation by Federal authorities and the criminals who have hidden behind robes and habits and vestments need to be rooted out and brought to justice. “
RICO!
Have you read the article?
If someone wrote a story about what happened there, people would think it was fiction. Nobody would believe it was true.
It’s horrifying.
Well, if that's what you got when they knew they were accountable to your parents and you didn't live at the school, imagine what they got away with with no prying eyes.
Rulers, paddles, and smacks in the face are not abuse. It is called discipline - when used judiciously.
I was a rebellious little hippie kid and some of the best things that ever happened to me were the rules and paddles - which ended after the 70’s (earlier in many places).
Now you have no discipline. You have no learning. You just have monsters, snowflakes, and chaos.
Read the article.
There’s a lot of *exceptions* walking around with damaged lives from that abuse.
It is time for a Second Reformation...hopefully this time it will take.
I’d approach this with caution.
There were many, many stories a few years ago about a boy’s reform school in Fla where the staff (supposedly) had murdered large numbers of boys. Elderly men who had been in the home told horror stories of murder, but they didn’t provide any proof. There is an old private cemetery on the grounds and when it was rediscovered the press went nuts with the idea it was a secret cemetery that was created to hold the remains of murdered boys.
There was nothing to the reports. After a few weeks of hysterical stories it turned out the cemetery wasn’t secret. It was documented there was a cemetery on the grounds, it was just forgotten due to the decades that had passed since it’s use. It held the unclaimed remains of boys who had died of illnesses or accidents. No family could be found for the boys and there wasn’t money to pay for traditional burials using a funeral home and regular cemeteries. There was no evidence of even a single case of murder and the story suddenly disappeared from the news.
I read the article. Can someone tell me why these nuns killed these orphans? What was their motive? It sounds like this also occurred in Ireland. Why would these nuns do this? They’re actually, Sisters, not Nuns.
How can anyone today know what was their motive?
The difference between "Sisters" and "Nuns" is subtle, and would not be known or even knowable to an elementary-school child. I don't know what your motive was in pointing that out.
You are most welcome.
Two words: Orphan Trains
The Catholic Church is corrupt...
Like you, I am not a Roman Catholic.
However, for about 40 years, I have been actively involved with a charity that provides a group home for retarded adults. During its first three decades, the program was staffed by Catholic sisters.
I have never seen nor heard the faintest hint of any misconduct on their part. I have nothing but praise and admiration for their service, which was entirely honorable and selfless.
Unfortunately, the original sisters grew too old to continue in their service and there were no replacements since few Catholic women are interested in that lifestyle. Since they retired, staffing has become much more difficult and, of course, expensive.
I confess that I did not read the whole Buzzfeed article: it’s too depressing. In the past, I’d have considered the possibility that many such accusations are false “recovered memories” similar to those recounted in the phony satanic abuse cases of the 1980s. After all, many such accusers are emotionally disturbed or easily manipulated. However, the extent of such cases combined with the accusations and admissions of senior clergy are conclusive: in many cases Roman Catholic clergy have committed unspeakably horrific acts and that Roman Catholic leadership has been complicit either in the acts themselves or in their cover-up.
However, we should not lose sight of the fact that most Catholic clergy were not involved in that evil, but genuinely sought to do the Lord’s work.
I read this piece. It is heartbreaking and hard to read.
It took a lot of covering from high places to hide these crimes.
A nun would be sequestered and not running an orphanage. Sisters would be the ones running the orphanage. Sisters, ie nurses, come from all shapes and sizes and might not be vetted. Doesn’t make any sense to me why they would be killing these children.
Absolutely horrifying and unforgettable. Those people are surely damned.
The last nun at my kids school was a bitch I referred to as Sister Nasty.
Bitch may be too nice of term.
Vetted? Vetted by whom?
Church “procedures” and “protocols” are worthless. Less than worthless, because it appears that they are used to weed out sincere young people who actually are moved by God to take the vows.
It may not make sense to you, but I strongly suspect it makes sense to someone.
Ive never met a priest or monk that I didnt like.
Or nuns, for that matter.
I have never felt uncomfortable with any Priest or Nun, EVER!
