We Saw Nuns Kill Children: The Ghosts of St. Joseph’s Catholic Orphanage
Buzzfeed News ^ | 27 August 2018 | Christine Kenneally

It was a late summer afternoon, Sally Dale recalled, when the boy was thrown through the fourth-floor window.

“He kind of hit, and— ” she placed both hands palm-down before her. Her right hand slapped down on the left, rebounded up a little, then landed again.

For just a moment, the room was still. “Bounced?” one of the many lawyers present asked. “Well, I guess you’d call it — it was a bounce,” she replied. “And then he laid still.”

Sally, who was speaking under oath, tried to explain it. She started again. “The first thing I saw was looking up, hearing the crash of the window, and then him going down, but my eyes were still glued—.” She pointed up at where the broken window would have been and then she pointed at her own face and drew circles around it. “That habit thing, whatever it is, that they wear, stuck out like a sore thumb.”

A nun was standing at the window, Sally said. She straightened her arms out in front of her. “But her hands were like that.”

There were only two people in the yard, she said: Sally herself and a nun who was escorting her. In a tone that was still completely bewildered, she recalled asking, Sister?

Sister took hold of Sally’s ear, turned her around, and walked her back to the other side of the yard. The nun told her she had a vivid imagination. We are going to have to do something about you, child.

We can always count on you to be bashing Catholics on Catholic threads, that are not Caucus’d, and we know what that is necessary :(

I agree that the Roman Catholic Church has in the past been treated unfairly.

Some of the stuff I saw happen going to Essex Catholic High School in Newark NJ in the early 70’s was on par with this and it was fairly routine. And= all boys Catholic high school run by the all male Christian Brothers of Ireland. Some knock down drag out brawls between students , white, black,Latino. Brothers(the staff) beating on students, students fighting back. Place was like a prison. I did two years and told my parents to get me the hell out there. Ended up going to my local public high school. A world of difference.

You’re suggesting I’m defending throwing children out of windows? And you have the nerve to call me a “Catholic whitewasher” (whatever that is).

Maybe cite a trusted news source and I may share your outrage. Until then you and Buzzfeed can buzz off.

My wife went to Catholic schools as she was growing up and recalls the nuns were strict, but were kind to her. Indeed, since she grew up in a very broken and dysfunctional home, they were the only ones who ever encouraged her to make something of herself. As an adult, she has only fondness and appreciation for the work they did. She would admit that she and her siblings gave them more than sufficient reason to be hard on them, and she probably gave them ulcers.

Crack open a Bible and read the gospels.

You’ll find Jesus there and He’s all you need.

I find, for readability, the English Standard Version is very good.

It can be found online and my two favorite resources for Bible are Biblegateway and Biblehub. Biblehub has a lot of resources in it and has the Greek and Hebrew available.

Organized religious institutions are not necessary for faith and belief in Christianity. You are kind to offer prayers for me. Just keep in mind that the church did not yet exist when Christ walked the earth.

Did you read the article?

Or are you just dismissing it offhand because of the website it’s posted on?

Organized religious institutions are not necessary for faith and belief in Christianity.

Exactly right.

When I first came to Christ, I had been raised Catholic but was not practicing.

Through a difficult time in my life, I started talking to God. That is NOT something I was ever told I could do. I needed a priest to be the go between.

But I did it anyway.

I finally reached the point in my life where I told God, "If You can straighten out this mess of a life of mine, You can have it. I'll do whatever You want, even become a missionary and go to Africa, because I'd rather be happy doing what You want me to do than keep on going the way I am."

That was over 40 years ago and I still remember that clear as day. And it changed my life.

Not exactly the *Sinner's Prayer* but I think God would rather hear from a sincere heart than worry about form and words.

Like this guy.....

Luke 18:9-14 He also told this parable to some who trusted in themselves that they were righteous, and treated others with contempt: “Two men went up into the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. The Pharisee, standing by himself, prayed thus: ‘God, I thank you that I am not like other men, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even like this tax collector. I fast twice a week; I give tithes of all that I get.’

But the tax collector, standing far off, would not even lift up his eyes to heaven, but beat his breast, saying, ‘God, be merciful to me, a sinner!’ I tell you, this man went down to his house justified, rather than the other. For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, but the one who humbles himself will be exalted.”

One travesty of all this is the spiritual damage done to people who, as a result of what institutionalized religion has done in the name of Christ, have a distorted view of God and drives them away from Him.

Prayers up for healing for you also.

I agree. Either ESV or NLT are very helpful; yet I can't do without the KJV for sheer majesty of language. I read somewhere that Shakespeare had some part in editing it.

Totally agree! In fact, the first Christians met in homes, catacombs and town squares to learn the faith and encourage each other in their walk with the Lord. Jesus said wherever two or more are gathered in His name, He is there in the midst of them. My prayer has been that you, and others who have been wounded, will find the peace that passes understanding through faith in Jesus Christ who died on the cross so that we might be justified by the grace of God through faith in Christ. His love heals and comforts. God bless you.

"My Catholic school experience was tough, but overall very positive. Last I heard, this school no longer has any nuns... they're all lay teachers. Kind of sad."

Belated reply: My younger sister is a teacher's aide at a Catholic elementary school - the same one I attended - and there are no nuns anymore, and some of the teachers aren't even Catholic. In fact, many of the students aren't Catholic, but go there because the educational quality is probably better than the public schools.

It's kind of turning into a school for affluent kids - Bob Newhart's grandson goes there. In my day, it was all Catholic, and students ranged from upper-class to lower-middle-class. Even though the tuition was low by today's standards, some parents scrimped and saved so their kids could attend.
