The Beatles ‘Hey Jude’ Celebrates 50th Anniversary
Rolling Stone ^ | August 26, 2018 | Rob Sheffield

Back in London, at the piano in his Cavendish Avenue bachelor pad, Paul played it for John and Yoko. When he got to the line “The movement you need is on your shoulder,” he told them, “I’ll change that, it’s a bit crummy.” John replied, “That’s the best line in it!” John heard this new tune as Paul cheering him on in his romance with Yoko. “I took it very personally,” John told Rolling Stone in 1968. “‘Ah, it’s me,’ I said. ‘It’s me.’ He says, ‘No, it’s me.’ I said, ‘Check. We’re going through the same bit.’ So we all are.” Through the years, in all his sniping about Paul, John never hid his admiration for “Hey Jude.” “I always heard it as a song to me,” he told Playboy’s David Sheff in 1980, shortly before his death.

If I recall, per paul, it was actually a song written to Julian Lennon. McCartney just changed “Jul” to “Jude.

I honestly cannot stand this song.

Worst Beatles song.

The song that proved The Beatles could get the public to listen to a song croaked out as if they were gagging to death.

Obviously the true inspiration for the song wasn’t Julian Lennon, it was Bob Dylan.

I pretty much like them all.

I remember watching the Beatles play Hey Jude live on the Smother’s Brothers show in 1968. Liked it ever since. It’s a happy song.

Hey Jude is about eight minutes too long.

I remember one day my crew and myself were working on the Rec Fields, getting them ready for another week of guests.

We had a large radio playing as Casey Kasem counted down the top 100 hits of all time. We were surprised when number one was “Hey Jude”.

I like it OK but still don’t think it was number 1.

Back in May, John and Paul made a surprise appearance on The Tonight Show, during a brief NYC jaunt. The interview was a fiasco — guest host Joe Garagiola had barely any idea who they were

I remember that interview. I was so looking forward to it, but it was so bad. I am still angry about how bad it was.

They changed the direction of popular music forever.

Not that Buddy Holly, Roy Orbison, and others couldn’t turn out singable melodies. I can’t sing along with anything made since “They Ran Old Dixie Down” and “The Southern Cross”.

I wouldn’t go as far as “can’t stand”, but yeah.

Beatles are kind of boring.
