Tarboro child punished for calling teacher 'ma'am'
TARBORO, N.C. -- Parents of a fifth-grader in North Carolina are concerned after their child was punished for referring to his teacher as "ma'am."
Teretha Wilson said she noticed something was wrong Tuesday when her 10-year old son Tamarion got off the school bus from North East Carolina Preparatory School.

I hope the dad made a point of saying “ma’am” during the meeting. I know I would have, every chance I got.
This teacher has no business being around kids, let alone in a position of authority over them. She should be fired.
Proverbs says not to be surprised when government ( and yes, school districts are govt) does silly stupid and outrageous things.
Look, if you have kids in public school you are indoctrinating them to the worst kind of society our world has to offer. Think I am too far off? Look around- unisex latrines/heads, transgender ( not just “straight” sex ed any more-). “Zero” tolerance-meaning self defense in the face of bullying or physical threat is just as “bad”. Leftist principles and lowest common denominators rule.
Yeah yeah I know, can’t afford to give up mom’s income, need that third SUV and that and summer cottage and blah blah blah. So what’s your problem?
There are plenty of good private/parochial accredited church schools-and most are willing to work with interested parents. Home/home group schooling is about as effective and mainstream as any other format these days too.
Conservative people have pretty much no excuse for sending their most precious resource and commodity to public school. And, no, your child won’t make a difference in the zoo, too impressionable until about 18 year old anyway.
The world has gone mad.

My mother grew-up in the South and she taught me from an early age to address any adult woman in that manner. About 12-13 years ago a libtard wench asked me not to address her in that manner and I was shocked frankly. For the life of me, I tried to avoid it when interacting with her but being courteous is a hard habit to break.
Guess I should have addressed her as: "Hey you, Beeeeetch!!"
The teacher should have to answer every written ma’am with the written definition:
ma’am
mam/
noun
unpunctuated: maam; noun: ma’am
a term of respectful or polite address used for a woman.
The “teacher” must have taken notes when Sen. Barbara “don’t call me ma’am” Boxer berated a brig. general when he mistakenly tried to be polite at a committee hearing.
The left suddenly and without warning chooses a word to criminalize. A few leftist wackos talk about it, but there is no general announcement. But the law is already in effect - the folks just don’t know it.
“black” was the preferred word about 40 years ago. Then the fake “rev” jessee jackson said that we were to say “african-American.” Immediately everyone who kept saying “black” was criminalized.
If you’re going to change the rules, you have to at least publish a full page notice in the nyt.
Same with maam. It’s the feminine equivalent of “sir.” It IS a term of respect. Ah, not good enough, say the wackos on the left. Now it’s a sign of disrespect! Ah, how quickly things get turned on their head.
And this is happening with every word. Why just the other day, we discovered that “vagina” is now criminal, and we are to say “front hole.”
It is insanity - but the insane people are running the asylum.
When I was a teen, one of my first jobs was in retail and I recall referring to one older gentleman as "sir". His reaction was so over the top, it made me do a double take. He screamed, "Sir?! Sir?! Do I look like a sir to you?!"
I said, no you look like an asshole.
I agree, that teacher must be fired..... twitter account: @BetsyDeVosED .... Respect goes both ways regardless of age.
My boss told me how, when she was in 8th grade, she was reprimanded by a substitue teacher for some minor offense. She replied, as polite Texans do, “Yes ma’am.” The teacher - from New Jersey - then sent her to the principal for being sarcastic.
I moved to the South about a year ago. It is amazing to hear the kind respect of being called maam. Its unbelievable this could be taken as offensive. My gosh, manners are now forbidden?!
I will say I do still keep forgetting to specify unsweetened tea. ;)
The only proper handling of this by the principal is to fire her and request her teaching certificate is yanked.
Would calling her a b_____ be appropriate?
That’s a real coffee spewer. Thanks.
I know from watching my ultra conservative brother in law deal with my dad who is a fair weather libral that a lot of liberals look at using the words sir or mam as a sign of defiance and disagreement. it surprised me watching an argument with my dad when he exploded at my brother in law that he was being disrespectful to him because he was being formal with him when talking. I myself look at anyone who is insulted at being treated formally of having a self-esteem issue.
Where are the names of the teacher and the principal?
And why is the teacher still employed?
“This teach needs to read this famous essay by George Orwell:
Politics and the English Language”
Boy, is that ever true today!
Tarboro is Southern country as it gets in North Carolina. My guess is the teacher is a Yankee carpetbagger.
