Ditto on June. In Goldilocks terms, it’s “just right”.
June 12-13
Any dates work for us but June sounds best. We vote June. ThanQ, freeangel
I vote July 24-25
So Rushmore is the site? Never been there. Cool.
My thoughts too.
In and voting for 12-13 June!
Thanks to all of you Fellow Freepers and FreeQs for together and with much prayer and perhaps “a little more action!” We’ll be able to save our great nation!
WWG1WGA!
Good to hear from you.
Since you live in the area and I was hoping you would be available for any of the dates mentioned no matter what, a non-vote on the date makes sense.
As we get closer to October 1 when people can begin booking rooms, please let us know about the towns and lodging in and around Mt. Rushmore so people can accommodate their budgets and the kind of “vibe” they want in terms of type of lodging.
I am assuming that pretty much everyone is going to drive their own car to SD or rent a car from the airport, but is there anything we should know about in terms of transportation and logistics in case more people than I anticipate can’t do this?
Also, is Rapid City the best or only real option to fly into? It doesn’t seem as if there are other cities around there for miles. Any thoughts on cheaper airports to fly into a couple or so hundred miles away that might also be nice for people to stay in for a couple days and explore in a side trip?
I vote for June.
I like the July dates
Finally got here to vote. Im excited SD is the location.
My vote is for the June dates.
Thank you for doing all the leg work for this!
I’m with the June crowd, and the Black Hills have tons of stuff to do. Hope to make it there.
I vote Mt Rushmore. Any date is good.
June 12 for me!
Good to hear the site is Rushmore, we’re close enough that, like defconw, dates are no real issue.
As far as air travel is concerned, Rapid City is pretty much on an island. Besides United flights to Gillette (about 150 miles) there are several alternate airports available, but they’re all at least 300 miles from Rushmore.
“Welcome to Big Sky country,” he said dryly.
(By Montana standards, a 300 mile drive is not unusual for a doctor’s appointment. The Dakotas might be slightly less but I don’t have enough experience downstream to state that as fact.)
See y’all at Rushmore.
Rapid City is a good place. I’d vote for June dates. Our anniversary is right about then, so it would be a good time for a trip.
I vote for the May dates :-)
Any possibility of ZOOM capability for those of us who cannot attend? Just asking.....
I vote for the May dates.
Thank you all for voting. June was far and away the winner with twice as many votes as July. May hardly got any votes at all.
So the FR Q Thread Meet-up will take place the weekend of June 12-13 and all who are interested can plan their lives around this date, which was my main intention on having these votes now.
Here are my pontifications on next steps, in no particular order:
1) Everyone is responsible for figuring out their own transportation and accommodations. I strongly recommend booking refundable lodging sometime this month so you can get the best price and room you can. You can always cancel as late as early June if something comes up.
2) You need not tell us you booked something now or what and where you booked. Frankly, for security reasons, it is probably best you keep this to yourself.
3) I do not think we really need to start to get commitments until early next year. I plan to take the next couple months off from mentioning this meet-up.
4) I ask that people who know something about the area and can make recommendations post these on this thread in the next couple of weeks. If you have recommendations about side trips, please post those as well.
5) Anyone who has questions about the area, please post these on this thread. If you are one of our “area experts,” please try to check this thread regularly in the next couple of weeks to answer questions.
6) We will discuss meeting venues toward the end of the year or early next year. Hopefully, some people familiar with the area can make some contacts and give us some details on places we can rent. For right now, if you want to throw out some information on what you willing to spend toward rental space and catering, feel free to do so.
7) We will wait until early next year once we know what the venue will be and thus what our space looks like and how our equipment needs can be met before discussing the agenda.
8) Some people have asked about ZOOM and such for those who cannot attend in person. I don’t have any philosophical problems with this, but I am not tech-oriented, so I leave that sort of thing to others to comment on and figure out.
