Documentary, The Creepy Line, reveals degree to which society is manipulated by Google and Facebook

Documentary, The Creepy Line, reveals the stunning degree to which society is manipulated by Google and Facebook and blows the lid off the remarkably subtle – hence powerful – manner in which they do it.

The Creepy Line is a title taken from the words of former Google CEO Eric Schmidt, when during a 2010 interview he explained Google’s code of conduct: “The Google policy on a lot of things is to get right up to the creepy line and not cross it.”

However, as Dr. Robert Epstein explains in the film, “Google crosses the creepy line every day.” Containing interviews with Jordan B. Peterson, Peter Schweizer, and others, The Creepy Line offers an explosive look at the meddling and intervening done by Google and Facebook on their supposedly “neutral platforms.”

The Creepy Line takes the conversation about data privacy and control further than ever before by examining what Google and Facebook do once they control a user’s data. Offering first-hand accounts, scientific experiments and detailed analysis, The Creepy Line examines what is at risk when these two tech titans have free reign to utilize the public’s most private and personal data.

Talk about a "creepy line":
- by its very nature, the idea of providing each and every individual with a ready-made tool for gossip, for dissembling, for outright fictions about their own reality and lives, and for spreading uncorroborated rumors and innuendo about their acquaintances, even friends and family--that idea seems to constitute the very definition of a "creepy" enterprise, regardless of what it is purported to be, or how technologically advanced it is constructed, or how much wealth it brings to its owner(s)!

I'll be sure to watch it this afternoon. Epstein is good. He was the main speaker in a video on Surveillance Capitalism from several months ago:

Breitbart News Town Hall -- Big Tech vs. Free Speech and Privacy

One of Epstein's main points in the earlier video is that Big Tech mostly sat out the last election because they thought Hilary was sure to win, and that they won't make that mistake again. The current ramping up of censorship and manipulation is exactly what he predicted.

Origin of the title:

“There is what I call the creepy line. The Google policy on a lot of things is to get right up to the creepy line and not cross it.
— Google CEO Eric Schmidt

Looks like it's not out yet; and there's practically no info about it.

Epstein has done important work on using search engines to manipulate elections invisibly. Manipulation by order of results, by autocomplete. A starting point is his webpage http://drrobertepstein.com/index.php/internet-studies.

Dr Epstein has impeccable establishment credentials. Former editor-in-chief of Psychology Today. His work on elections was published in Proceedings of the National
Academy of Sciences USA. He can’t be dismissed as a mere Deplorable.

A bit of followup on Epstein’s work.

“The New Mind Control” mentions work by others on a different way to manipulate elections invisibly. Facebook could identify the political leanings of many of its users, and send out “get out the vote” reminders only to those users who agree with Facebook’s politics. A small effect, around half a percent in the experiment, but maybe important in a close election.

Epstein’s article in POLITICO “How Google could rig the 2016 election” has a good summary near the end on “the gold standards of research in the behavioral sciences.” How to do these things right, explained in one paragraph for a general audience.
