Franco’s family to take charge of Spanish dictator’s remains

The family of the late Spanish dictator Francisco Franco will take charge of his remains after Spain’s government has them exhumed from a mausoleum, his relatives said Saturday.

“Of course we will take charge of the remains of my grandfather,” Franco’s grandson, Francis Franco, told Spanish newspaper La Razon in an interview published Saturday. “We won’t leave them in the hands of the government.”

While criticizing the decision to exhume his grandfather, he says the family doesn’t plan to fight the legal changes that Spain’s center-left government approved Friday to have Franco’s body dug up and removed from a mausoleum the general built to honor the nation’s civil war dead.

“Spending money against the government is a waste of time,” he said. …

Holding his own in his fight to remain dead (quoting SNL, back when it was funny).

Yeah I wonder how “funny” it would be to liberals if I said, “This Just In: Nelson Mandela is still dead.” HA HA HA HA!

Franco saved Spain. First from the communists and then not getting involved in WWII.

That’s not called saving it. One may say that Éamon de Valera “saved” Ireland in much the same manner.

He didn’t have the title of “Generalissimo”, though.

Japanese intel during WW2 was largely run out neutral Spain’s offices abroad, payback for the Spanish-American War.

Big difference. Hitler would have invaded Spain had Franco not won the Civil War.

Oh, this again. So joining the Allies was never an option for him? Those terrible Allies. Imagine the war ending in 1942 instead of 1945.

I hope the family finds the old stiff a nice, quiet plot.

We should apologize for the Spanish-American War, “sorry for the misunderstanding” - and give them Puerto Rico back.

Remember when Hugo Chavez had the remains of Simon Bolivar exhumed to prove or not that he was poisoned? Freakin leftists also gotta disturb the dead over their agenda. Despicable cretins.

“That’s not called saving it.”

So keeping a country from going communist is not saving it? And keeping a country from being occupied by the Nazis is not saving it?

“One may say that Éamon de Valera “saved” Ireland in much the same manner.”

Well, if Ireland were on the continent, yes. If the U.K. were occupied by the Nazis, yes. Otherwise, no, not really.

“So joining the Allies was never an option for him?”

Not until at least 1945, no. Seriously, do you have any idea of what you’re talking about? In 1939, Spain was exhausted and in ruins. Spain was officially allied with Italy and Germany but Franco remained a passive ally and refused Hitler’s repeated requests that he openly side with the Axis powers and engage in battle. Until his neighbor - France - was freed of the Nazi occupation there was zero chance Franco would side with the Allies. And even if he wanted to side with them, why would he put his men and his resources in harm’s way after an exhausting three year long civil war?

“Those terrible Allies.”

Those Allies had been railing against Franco for years. Franco had no reason to assume they were his friends. As the Cold War heated up, the Allies suddenly lost their distaste of Franco.

“Imagine the war ending in 1942 instead of 1945.”

Imagine France and the U.K. simply doing their job and ending the war before it began. They had every right to remove Hitler from power in 1936 and could have done it easily. They did nothing but talk because of the Depression and their continuing pain over the losses of World War I. Hindsight is great is it not?

I see you’re still with the personal attacks. So your opinion I’ll politely take with a grain of salt. Have a nice day.

I am not in favor of digging up old dictators, Soviet leaders, former enemies, those involved with the Lost Cause, and celebrities who have lost popularity. Grant was a known drunkard and Washington was a slave holder, let them all all rest.

That’s the biggest canard of all. What communists were on Spain’s border threatening a revolution? Never mind the false dilemma of having to choose between international socialism and national socialism.

Have a nice day. It was the Allies who saved Spain, not Franco.

That wasn’t a personal attack.
That was a deconstruction of your post, unsupportable point by unsupportable point.

When you make a post you cannot defend, don’t whine about holes getting poked in it.
