Tim Conway is battling dementia.
The 84-year-old Carol Burnett Show star’s daughter Kelly is asking to be appointed conservator of her father and be in charge of his medical treatments, according to court documents obtained by PEOPLE and first reported by The Blast.
Kelly, 56, filed the documents in Los Angeles on Friday, claiming Conway’s wife Charlene is “planning to move him out of the excellent skilled nursing facility he is currently at” and place him in one that won’t give him access to “registered nurses at all times and his 24-hour caregiver and speech therapist (to help with swallowing).”
Kelly also states that Conway cannot “properly provide for his personal needs for physical health, food, and clothing” and is “almost entirely unresponsive.”
She hopes to be granted guardianship so she can also administer her father’s medications herself.

Dementia is a broad category of brain diseases that cause a long-term and often gradual decrease in the ability to think and remember that is great enough to affect a person's daily functioning.

A person's consciousness is usually not affected.
A dementia diagnosis requires a change from a person's usual mental functioning and a greater decline than one would expect due to aging.
These diseases also have a significant effect on a person's caregivers.
That last line triggered me because from the sound of it, Dementia is a gradual tuning out of reality.
That's bad ??
I spent a good many of my hippy years intentionally inducing never never land and I, by golly enjoyed it (easy there Hoss, I got saved in 1981 and that ended THAT)...
And if ANY of us never had responsibilities of any kind and was relieved of going to work or even paying attention to other people (I believe it is a fact that most people's favorite subject is themselves ... ), going into dreamland is a pretty OK thing.
Do we have the technology that taps into a demented person that will translate the brain waves into television ?
We have no idea where they are or what they're doing and it just might not be a bad state of mind.
So who's really suffering ?

People don’t often remember that character! But it is how most baby boomers first met Tim Conway.
When my husband ran a theatrical institution, we had nights honoring famous performers. Carol Burnett was one. When my husband reached out to Conway, Tim called us at home one night. I picked up the phone, heard the voice and promptly dropped the receiver in shock, disconnecting the poor guy. I was that surprised and excited. What a talent.
He was so funny when he was on Carol Burnett. I love when they did a parody of ‘The Odd Couple’s and ‘Gone With The Wind’
Prayers for Tim and especially his loved ones who are painfully aware even as he slips form reality.
I remember him saying something like he couldn’t understand why sharks were following him in the water. He thought that wearing his lucky ham around his neck would protect him.
And then there’s Dorf.
Indeed. Back in the 1970s my sister and I watched daily syndicated reruns of the carol burnett show. Tim Conway was by far our most favorite cast member of the show. He would have us litterally rolling on the floor, clutching our sides with long laughter.
Sooo sad. One of the greats.

Prayers for Mr. Conway’s suffering to be eased.
It may be that Mr. Conway now requires just palliative care. And if that is indeed what his wife is doing, the daughter may not understand that.

He wound up on the floor convulsed with laughter. Tim said Vicki always managed to steal the show.

A friend relayed a story of his aunt going through a very rapid stage of dementia. She was laughing and singing and carrying on conversations with no one but herself, not acknowledging the family or nurses for most of a month. Active and doing chores, being ‘normal’, just in her own world. Then went catatonic all of a sudden. That’s when they stepped in. She passed soon after.

What a wonderful quote. Once he passes he will have that desire to thank Gd back again. He will be whole again.
