Caught on camera: Car goes 198 mph on Wake County [NC] highway

WAKE COUNTY, NC (WTVD) -- One hundred ninety-eight miles per hour!

It's how fast a driver in Wake County got up to last month on US-1 near the Triangle Expressway.

William Jefferson, 22, was behind the wheel -- he has since been charged with street racing and reckless driving.

Only on #ABC11 the wild video of a street racing stunt in wake county. If you can believe it, the car got up to 198 MPH! @NCSHP pic.twitter.com/7kL4vBqSju — Josh Chapin (@JoshChapinABC11) August 17, 2018

"It's one reason why I don't want my kids on the roads late at night," said Maryanne McAdams, a mother from Holly Springs. "I don't have a driver yet --we're about a year away but it's that kind of stuff that makes me really nervous."

North Carolina State Highway Patrol said somebody sent them the seven-minute YouTube clip as part of a complaint.

The video shows Jefferson in his Dodge Challenger "Hellcat" driving nearly 130 mph over the speed limit on US-1. In addition, the video shows Jefferson take the car over 100 in a 40 mph zone.

The clip starts with the car doing "doughnuts" in a parking lot before moving to a clip of Jefferson with his hood open at a nearby Sheetz.

"I don't think that road is particularly dangerous but anybody going 198 mph and it's going to be particularly dangerous," McAdams said. "It's really a miracle that nobody was hurt or killed in that."

Jefferson has a clean record except for a few traffic violations.

Rented a Nissan Maxima last week.
Averaged 28.2 miles per gallon.
Got on it a couple of times.
Don’t know if I ever went 100, but however fast I got, sure did get there in a hurry, with a smile on.

“Mr. Jefferson is a “privileged status” individual in an over-the-top liberal town. He’ll go free with a very light tap on the wrist.”

Yep, they are waiting until he actually kills someone or maybe a whole family out for a drive. Then everyone is going to scream ‘Oh, why didn’t they do something?’ Any takers on my bet?

Don't forget to mention that he's an aspiring rapper who was turning his life around.

These kind of cars usually have aerodynamic drag limits, if not electronic limiters. Not enough horsepower to overcome the drag at a certain speed, in this case, less than 200 mph.

Not meaning to be argumentative but the German autobahn fatality rate is half that of the USA interstate fatality rate

And Germany is a very densely populated nation

Bout like Maryland but with 83 million people

Hence eight lane rural autobahn

I loved it....

Did 300 kph in a 928 S4 1988 Ruf tuned between Stuttgart and Munich

You want to go fast go somewhere safe like Germany or out west or somewhere at night with no traffic and a spotter

If you wreck it’s just on you

Rented a Nissan Maxima last week.

The 2018 version has 300 ponies. It has a bit more power than entry level luxury models from BMW and Mercedes for a similar cost. It probably has a top end of around 150 MPH...

Where does one such as Mr. Jefferson come by the funds to procure an $80,000 Hellcat?

There are wealthy black people. Most cities have suburban high schools where students drive shockingly expensive cars. A couple high schools I drive by have Range Rovers and Mercedes in the student lots.

For all we know, his mama’s baby daddy is Michael Jordan or someone similar. And lots of illegal activity pays well.

Back in my ute, in the early 80’s, I had a ‘76 Camaro.
It could do the quarter mile in 14.6 minutes.

I was driving behind a Ferrari on the way back from church. A station wagon Ferrari! (Well - a hatchback I suppose.) The roof was all glass. It looked pretty sharp.

I had to look on the web. Top speed of 208 MPH, $300,000.

What might be cool is if they built a super-charged war machine hot rod made of Kevlar. Then recruit this guy and give him Special Ops training.

Moonless night: Terrorist Camp.
Driving with no visible lights (using night vision) the Seal Streak races through the terrorist camp at 198 mph spewing minigun bullets and 40mm 'nades while dropping mines. Yeah, Baby!
