Windows 10 is pulling ahead from Windows 7, says StatCounter
Windows Report ^ | 08/05/2018 | Matthew Adams

StatCounter and NetMarketShare are the two primary OS market data sources. Both those sites paint a somewhat different picture regarding Windows 10’s and Windows 7’s market share for desktops and laptops. NetMarketShare highlights that Windows 7 still has the largest user base, but the latest StatCounter data shows that Windows 10 is pulling further ahead of Windows 7.

StatCounter’s latest data for July 2018 shows that Windows 10 now has a 47.25% market share, which is just about its largest ever figure to date. Windows 7‘s percentage share has dropped from 39.63% to 39.06% on StatCounter’s graph. Thus, Win 10‘s share is now 8.19% higher than 7’s figure. So Windows 10 is now clearly the leading desktop and laptop OS on StatCounter’s graph.

NetMarketShare, however, shows that Windows 10 is still closing the market share gap with 7. The NetMarketShare graph shows that Windows 10’s percentage share has increased from 35.71% to 36.58% in July. Yet, Windows 7 remains ahead with a 41.23% share.

Both NetMarketShare and StatCounter highlight that Windows 10’s market share is certainly increasing as Windows 7’s user base steadily declines. Microsoft will stop supporting Windows 7 from 2020, so 7’s market share figure will probably continue to fall. The software giant has already instructed channel partners to bang the drum about Windows 7 approaching the end of support line. Furthermore, MS Office 2019 will also be exclusively for Windows 10.

While it remains a little unclear about what Windows platform has the highest market share, Windows 10 is still very much on an upward trend. That upward trend will certainly continue with Microsoft discontinuing support for Win 7. More and more Windows 7 users are switching to 10, so it’s only a matter of time before Win 10 overtakes 7 on NetMarketShare’s graph as it has on StatCounter.

and there is NO way to prevent the automatic updates to the operating system.

Can't you use the hosts file to block the IP addresses of the update servers?

And I’m toying with downloading a 7 IOS and building a new machine from it. There is no way to convert from XP to 7 so I thought Id build the 7 and carefully move applications over one at a time.

Palemoon and Mozilla on XP are falling behind.

From XP to 7?

The title is kinda funny. It kind of reads, “An 8 year old OS is just now beginning to slowly pull ahead of a 11 year old OS in sales.”

if it had been a decent operating system instead of being a crapload of spyware- and allowed people to retain control over the system like 7 had, then windows 10 would have far surpassed 7 long before now

“and there is NO way to prevent the automatic updates to the operating system.”

all you have to do is disable the update service ...

Well, when you're forcedto be assimilated by the Borg- I mean, upgrade to Windows 10 - then sure, the market gap is going to close. But, I still have this little baby here (reaches over and pats my Latitude C600 lovingly) that still runs XP SP3, and will be around long after there's an OS-related TEOTWAWKI. Oh, and the spare parts hold out. Just like a flip phone, it'll always have a purpose when the chips are down.

A new operating system has more users than an old operating system. MS-DOS users are now more numerous than CP/M users. In other news, more Apple users own Macintosh than Apple 2 computers. ( click the ad )

I had Win XP for years on my desk top and it was great. Never had a need for all of the bells and whistles; just basic internet access to communicate.

My hard drive crashed beyond recovery a couple of years ago. My computer service owner had refurbed PCs with Win 7 and Win 10. He advised me to stick with the Win 7, based on my past user usage and the big difference with Win 10, which was more difficult to use.

I bought the Win 7 unit and have been happy with performance. I don’t need all of that gaming crap.

We now have Win10 Pro on all of our machines, having migrated from XP and Win7. Main apps are graphics, DB, test web server, office stuff (but not MS Office), etc. with no major problems so far.

Well, duh. Windows 7 is almost impossible to get any more, and is not supported well. You can still get it through Dell and HP but pay an enormous price for it.. Windows 10 is everywhere.

The Windows XP kernel, which is 5.1 (basically, Windows NT 5.1) is not sustainable in a world of advanced hacks and buffer overflow attacks.

The Windows 7 kernel is actually is 6.2 (Vista was 6.0, and Windows Server 2008 was 6.1), and has deep level improvements that couldonly be achieved thru a complete kernel rewrite (the 6.x kernel) and has such features as elevation of privilege, buffer overflow mitigation, placing user executables in user, not system folders, and other controls.

Both Windows 8 and now Windows 10 improve on this and further limit successful attacks.

Did you know that the Legal department at Microsoft is the single largest department?

EVERYDAY the face multiple lawsuits from various organizations and users that were successfully attacked and their data lost, stolen or compromised in some way.

Back during the 1990s, it was expected that security was the responsibility of the end user. This was flipped over the years.

To prevent liability from dumb practices and lack of security on the part of end users, Microsoft has put many of these measures into the OS.

In many cases, you can turn them off, but they are now on by default.

If you want to go into the cesspool that the Internet is without protection, by all means, go for it.

But it ain’t Bill Gates making you do so (by he way, he’s long since retired and has nothing to do with the company’s operations.)

Since I may need to buy a new computer in a year and a half, I am soon going to put a Trump sticker on my computer, so when a democrat destroys it, they have to buy me a new computer.

Trump stickers... IT’S A TRAP.

Not by choice. Just wait till Microsoft starts charging a monthly fee to use 10.
