Springfield, Missouri votes down ban on acquiring new pit bulls

First-ever election win for pit bull advocates

SPRINGFIELD, Missouri––Out-spending voices for animal and human safety by a margin perhaps as high as $10,000 to $1.00, pit bull advocates on August 7, 2018 celebrated their first-ever defeat of a pit bull ban in a municipal general election.

Reversing the outcome of earlier attempts to repeal pit bull bans in Miami-Dade County, Florida, and Aurora, Colorado, pit bull advocates in Springfield, Missouri polled at least 21,142 votes, or 68% of the votes cast, against 9,772 votes (32%) for the ban.

Older breed-specific ordinance remains in effect

Opened Question 1 on the Springfield primary election balloti:

“Shall the City of Springfield establish a future ban upon the possession of new pit bull dogs within the City limits by prohibiting acceptance of any new pit bull registrations and only allowing renewals of existing current pit bull dog registrations?”

Though the proposed ban on new pit bull registrations was rejected, the election result does not mean the end of breed-specific legislation in Springfield.

Still in effect is a pit bull registration ordinance enacted in 2006, which requires the owners of pit bulls and pit bull mixes to have them microchipped, spayed or neutered, vaccinated, and identified with a registration tag which must be worn at all times.

The language of the proposed Springfield pit bull ban, meant to strengthen the 2006 ordinance, was approved 5-4 by the city council in November 2017.

You choose to ignore that I wrote “almost” about the Lab. I know how to contend with and defend against a dog attack, no matter the breed. Ankle biters pose their own challenges because no normal person chooses to use excessive force against a tiny domestic animal. A pit or lab would pose no issue for me.

The notion that the average person is incapable of defending themselves from a dog attack - no matter the breed - is disturbing to me.

And as a corollary, I view anyone who would intentionally-breed an animal for the purpose of violence, fighting or, for that matter, to be abused, is an animal whose actions merit its own appropriate response.

Then again, this is the pathetic society in which we live.

But I am capable of compromise: I will accede to banning pits if we also ban muslims.

There. I’m done with this thread. No further comment.

Worth a try. Did you open up either of the two links I posted on #18? The person claiming 40 years and no bites will either be completely safe or complete;y wrong, so he has no complaint.

From: National Pit Bull Victim Awareness site. https://www.nationalpitbullvictimawareness.org/ What’s wrong with pit bulls?

There are more than 25 media reports of pit bull attacks on people per week, and one death every 13 days.

By comparison, there are approximately 15 shark attacks on people per year in the United States, with one death every two years.

Pit bull attacks are rarely “dog bites”. Most attacks require hospitalization.

Although they represent only 4.5% of dogs in America, pit bulls killed 64.4% of 360 Americans who died as a result of a dog bite injury between 2005-2015, compared to Rottweilers at 11.4% and German Shepherds at 3.6%.

Pit bull attacks have increased 830% in seven years in the US and Canada.

In addition to attacks on people, pit bulls killed 24,000 other dogs and 13,000 cats in the US in 2015, or 66 dogs per day.

Boomer is the worst human being I have ever ran into on a blog. An absolute PHD in assholiness. She has called for killing and acid dipping anyone posting any dog bite.org stats. I don't know why admin allows her to continue to post her nazi dog screed. It baffles me. I will never give another dime to this site if she is the kind of bigot that freerepublic allows to post without censorship. . With so many hateful derogatory posts I'm sure boomer may very well be a tranny or at least a flaming homosexual. a cross dressing butch dike is probably more on the money.

Forming policy based on the appeal to emotions is Hoggism.
I’m not a Hoggite.

It's amazing that the irrationality of this statement proves conclusively that you are. And your hyperbole on this thread sustains it.

The links which I posted, and the bald statistics cited by Norski tell the story and are irrefutable. If they stir up within you the kind of oppositional defiance that I have seen, there is something wrong with your thinking machine as well as your emotion generator.

I have been bitten more than once, and can tell you no one who has not been a victim does not know the instant, violent, and traumatic experience this involves. For an adult, it is greatly unsettling; but for a little child, this is stark, raving terror.

Back in the day I had a small-town morning paper route four miles, 90 customers, and many dogs of every kind long. Some loved to attack me whether I was on foot in the winter, or in warmer weather on my bike especially, but they found out they were going to get hurt bad if they got close to me, and several owners found that out. I carried a hunting knife every day.

There were a few houses to whom I would not deliver their paper if their dog was loose, and some to which I would not go at all. One had a part-boxer nasty implacable biter whom the owner refused to curb. And that was long before pit bulls ever appeared on the scene, 65 years ago. There were several other dogs on my route with whom I was friends.

As of this day, I know some pit bulls, a couple of which are very happy to see me coming. But am well aware from experience that anyone who trusts one is making a very big mistake. I would never, ever own one, and I deem anyone who does (except for defense of unattended property) a fool in that respect. Your attitude confirms my opinuion.

What I have seen is that letting two of these run loose together is a very dangerous situation, because they tend to provoke each other into a hunting/killing mode. A few days ago I posted an article from the Philadelphia Channel 3 that the neighbors called the polivce to stop three pit bulls that had killed and were eating the owner's unattended two year old child. The police had to shoot dead two of the dogs, and wound the other to cause them to desist. That happened within 40 miles of me.

I see pit bulls everywhere I go in this urban and suburban environment I live and have to walk through. As an old man now, I don't depend on a knife. I carry a 9mm or M1911 wherever I am legally allowed to. I will use it without hesitation; but unlike a pit bull, not without provocation and the certainty that harm is imminent, dog or human--or both.

This is hypothetically a free country in which you can have your opinion, your dog, or your preferred behavior. But don't try to inflict them on me, capisce? You will not like my reaction, dispassionately as it will be.

But don't try to inflict them on me, capisce?

Which is why I am not an advocate for a specific breed of dog
but rather for Responsible Dog Ownership regardless of breed.
I care about ALL victims of ALL dog attacks regardless of breed or severity.

An individual's right to own a dog ends at the point where it infringes on your rights.
I continually point out the principles of Responsible Dog Ownership...

CONTAIN, CONTROL, MAINTAIN, TRAIN and SOCIALIZE

As well I advocate for EDUCATION.
Schools have time to teach that Heather can have two mommies.
They should also, from the very earliest age, be teaching children about dog safety.
Of how to and how not to behave around and interact with dogs.

I also press for EFFECTIVE LAWS that are RIGOROUSLY ENFORCED
All too often an inadequate response from Animal Control result in a return visit to deal with a tragedy.
I stress that the community has a responsibility to point out problems and ensure that Animal Control does its job and that laws are strictly enforced.

I too have been bitten. Well I remember the day.
I was 11 years old in Waterbury Connecticut, the day the tornado tore through the city, May 21st, 1962.
I went to the reservoir to get an elevated view of the city and check if I could see any damage.
There was a GSD there, all by itself. I went to make friends with it and still carry the scar from the encounter upon my leg.
I have a little leeriness in the back of my mind about them but I'm rational enough to realize that not all GSDs are bad.

I'll pass by the first two sentences of your post. They are not worthy of composing a response. Hopefully, you will understand why upon reflection.

Disagree without being Disagreeable
Have a Nice Day

Do not confuse a pit bulls proclivity to attack without provocation with that of a bred guard dog who is either trainable or euthanized. Nor either with those of other breeds which are bred to be work dogs or companion dogs, not given to unprovoked attack.

I am not a dog-hater. What disgusts me is owners who take on the responsibility and fail to carry it out, let alone willfully abuse one.

Trooper stopped Dogo attacking Jenna Rae Sutphin
The Chesapeake Today ^ | June 21, 2018 | Staff

Posted on 6/23/2018, 3:35:36 PM by Norski

HUNTINGTOWN, MD. – Maryland State Police report that a dog that is similar in appearance and aggressiveness to a Pit Bull mauled a woman in Calvert County on June 21, 2018. The breed of dog, a specially bred fighting dog known as a “DOGO”, is known for having an unsteady temperament. The young child of a police officer was killed in Lusby in a pit bull attack recently.

The victim is identified as Jenna Rae Sutphin, 28, of the unit block of Cherry Hill Road in Huntingtown, Maryland. She was transported from the scene to Calvert Memorial Health Center by ambulance and later transferred by air to Washington MedStar Hospital Center where she died.

At about 7:15 a.m., a trooper from Prince Frederick Barrack responded to the unit block of Cherry Hill Road and Route 4 in Huntingtown, Maryland, after receiving an animal complaint from motorists passing by the area. Upon his arrival at the scene, the trooper found the dog actively engaged in the attack on the woman in an overgrown area near the highway, adjacent to the front yard of the victim’s home.

Police say that as the trooper approached the scene, the dog aggressively began moving towards the trooper.

In fear for his safety, the trooper fired his State Police issued .40 caliber pistol, wounding the dog resulting in the winged dog fleeing from the scene of the attack.

The trooper immediately began rendering aid to the victim until EMS personnel arrived on the scene. Sheriff deputies from the Calvert County Sheriff’s Office also responded to assist.

In an attempt to apprehend the dog and prevent it from doing further harm to anyone, police on scene fired again, fatally wounding the animal. The dog reportedly belonged to the woman’s fiance.
