A local woman is has been working on her 7-1 split --- thankfully it's not a difficult stretch. It's bowling and she's been perfecting her follow through for 43 years -- since she was 55.
Her name is Avis and, now, she's 98 years old! She is the one her league counts on, and after all these years, she isn't stopping anytime soon.
"I was 55 when I first started bowling, says Avis Stiles, "that makes what, 43 years!"
Now, a solid figure on Mercy Joplin's Prestige League, Avis Bowls for the company and good times.
"We can kid each other if they make a mistake, well, we can kid them and it doesn't make any difference they know it's all in fun, says Avis Stiles.
"She's always upbeat, never loses her cool, you know, just a joy to be with, says Millie Dickerson.
And as for the years to come, Avis doesn't plan on giving up her spot on the team anytime soon.
"Well if I can manage it, I'll bowl until I'm a hundred. That's just over a year and a half, so that shouldn't be a problem, says Avis Stiles.

Bet she grew up on Lard, cream and bacon!
Remarkable - bowling requires good balance, good eyesight and coordination. I’m jealous;(
Not to mention flexibility.
You really need to bend down and place the ball on the ground not drop it.
Where is this?
Reminds me of Donald Fagen/Steely Dan’s song “Miss Marlene”, about a 17y/o teen girl/pro-bowler who had a tragic end to her career/life.
Nice jazzy-esque tune...
“Back in double-o-seven
Miss M was queen
She could roll like a pro rolls
When she was seventeen”
“Whether straight or hammered
She was the best in town
When she release the red ball
All the pins fall down”
