Charlotte Rae, who endeared herself to a generation of TV fans as the affable Mrs. Garrett on the long-running NBC sitcom The Facts of Life, died Sunday at her home in Los Angeles, publicist Harlan Boll announced. She was 92.
Rae, who earlier earned two Tony nominations and played Woody Allen's mother in Bananas (1971) and a long-suffering wife on the classic sitcom Car 54, Where Are You?, revealed in April 2017 that she had been diagnosed with bone cancer, seven years after a pancreatic cancer diagnosis.
"Now, at the age of 91, I have to make up my mind," she said in a statement at the time. "Im not in any pain right now. Im feeling so terrific and so glad to be above ground. Now I have to figure out whether I want to go have treatment again or opt for life. I love life. Ive had a wonderful one already Ive had a great life, but I have so many wonderful things happening. Id like to choose life. Im grateful for the life Ive already had.
Rae originated the character of Edna Garrett in 1978 for NBC's Diffrent Strokes and then went on to play her for seven seasons on the Facts of Life spinoff. In 1982, she received an Emmy nomination for outstanding lead actress in a comedy series.
Debuting in 1979, Facts of Life revolved around a group of teenage girls attending a private New York boarding school. Guiding them through the trials and tribulations of adolescence was Edna Garrett, their no-nonsense, but always understanding, housemother. (A reboot is in the works at Sony.)

Ditto.
Ping.
Facts of Life is one of those shows that was on forever and that I never watched. I think I saw maybe 2 episodes. Charlotte Ray was a charming actress. glad to know she had such a long life.
Always liked her. Dont know her politics and dont think I ever heard her say anything political, which is kind of surprising considering she was on what I think would be considered kind of a left-leaning show.
RIP!
Earliest I recall seeing her was as the Tupperware lady on All in the Family. Edith hosts her first Tupperware party.
When Rae’s character sits in front of her.
Edith says I welcome you with open noses as Rae picks her nose.
I'm guessing you're not a female born between 1965 and 1980.
LOL, nope. I also never watched that show with Bob Saget in which he had several daughters and there were two other guys helping him raise them (though I always thought Lori Loughlin was cute).
Girls! Girls! Girls!
May she RIP. :(
As a young lad, I had a crush on Kim Fields.
Sylvia Schnauzer - funniest TV character ever!
She did a really funny commercial for Mr Muscle oven cleaner.
Sad news. Memory eternal.
that fact of life is it ends for us all.
On Friday Hollyweird announced a proposed “Facts of Life” reboot. Coincidence? I think not, Ms. Rae was murdered by disgust.
