I was watching yet another WWII documentary about Japan during WWII this weekend and then it hit me... All and I mean, ALL, Japanese men (and most boys) during that era all had the same exact same buzzcut haircut that looked terrible. Yeah, military recruits in the U.S.A. get that same haircut in bootcamp but most let it grow out later at least on top. Yet Japanese men ALL had that same lousy buzzcut all the time.
Perhaps the only Japanese man not to have that buzzcut was the Emperor. So what was the reason? Was it conformity? Was there some law that declared that all men must have an ugly looking buzzcut? Just what was going on back then?
I did see an interesting biographical movie about Admiral Yamamoto recently and his hair was longer than a buzzcut. However, when I looked at pictures of Yamamoto from WWII, it turned out the REAL Yamamoto also had that terrible haircut everyone else from the lowliest army private up to Prime Minister Tojo had.
So does anybody have the reason for the terrible WWII era Japanese haircuts?
BTW, I notice that in occupation Japan, men quickly allowed their hair to grow longer. Also movies made in Japan about WWII show their soldiers with longer hair than they actually had back then. So even the Japanese are now embarrassed about how ridiculous those WWII era haircuts made them look.
I don’t know about that... even John Paul Jones had weevils in his hard tack.
Ever get your hair caught on a bush?? Nuff said...
“contrary to myth, a gas mask should seal even on a bearded face. I use a dive mask with no problem and I have a full beard. “
hmmmm. Do you never get water in your mask?
"Dad, Johnny Unitas grew his hair out. Is HE un-American?"

I won. I could grow my hair out provided it never got longer than his! Still isn't, actually.
Velly good!
Yep. They don’t issue you much in boot camp that you don’t pay for.
We allow man buns now
It’s not like I spit on them or anything, and it’s not a racist thing.
Every japanese person I’ve been exposed to has been a terrible, terrible person. I had a shopmate, who passed away recently, who lived in Japan for a time. His wife was Japanese and after 15 years in the country still refused to speak english. He was forced to speak Japanese to her. I learned some Japanese and found out that most of the time she was saying some pretty shi!!y things about me.
Stuck up, elitest garbage. It’s a culture thing. I don’t respect them in the slightest. And when I built my drift car and ran against Signal I named the car the Enola Gay.
Because that’s what they would do.
Back in 1995, I was in the Tokyo city airport (Haneda), waiting for my flight south at the gate area.
An elderly man in casual clothes was there with a Shinto priest. The elderly man had a cap on that was similar to our American Legion caps in appearance.
It then dawned on me. It was the 50th anniversary of Iwo Jima. He and the priest were taking a flight there for the commemoration ceremony.
Had it been 50 years earlier, we would have been at each other's throat.
I spent some time in Korea. The Moe Howard cut seemed popular when I was there!
Yes, but no more so than when I was clean shaven. Any divers here with beards can tell you facial hair is no problem as to sealing.
My nephew was in Marine boot camp exactly a year ago and he said they deducted $300 per month from his pay for food.
And when I was a young kid in the sixties, I had a butch haircut too. As I recall, I hated it. Haha!
I don't see any bad buzz cuts.
Can you link to a youtube video that shows the bad buzz cuts you're talking about?
Yes, in the jungles of Vietnam.
$300? That’s a chunk but I’m not surprised.
They really missed their chance. Imagine a banzai charge of 2000 screaming Japanese all with mullets. You’d be laughing too hard to fight back.
Check out any video of Tojo without headgear.
In 1945 he was sent to a Naval base in San Diego, to be a crew member on a landing boat for the invasion of Japan. He was literally saved by The Bomb.
Following the War he returned to the barber trade.
Please post a link to the video you want me to watch.
It doesn't have to be a hot link.
Thank you.
