A group of South American lizards that can grow up to four feet long (1.2 meters) has established a home in the Florida wild after being brought to the United States as pets, and the reptiles could begin a voracious march across the U.S. South, according to a new study.

Tegu lizards, which currently live in two large colonies in Florida, could expand into an area from the Carolinas to Central Texas, according to the scientific report published in July on the website for the journal Nature.

New Tegu skin boots go for about $400 per pair. I don’t see overpopulation of these things as a problem once Capitalism is applied to the problem.

Shoot on sight. And don't talk about it.

That's what should be done with wolves out west.

Shoot on sight. And don't talk about it.

Refreshingly - in our state at least - you can often shoot on site AND talk about it with many of these exotic species.

I seem to remember bounties on some of them.

That is happening out west, to a small degree, and has been for a while. The ranchers in New Mexico have been taking care of business since wolves were "re-introduced." The wildlife management agencies are all butt-hurt about it, but what do you expect? People are just protecting their livelihoods.

Florida seems so often to be the U.S. entry point of exotic animals from foreign countries. What is it about Floridians? They been baking in the sun too much?

Want to really wipe them out? Make Tegu skin the new trend in custom auto upholstery down in the Miami area. The Cubanos will take care of the problem.
