On paper, everything was going well for Seth Owen. A valedictorian of a high school in Jacksonville, Florida, with a 4.16 grade-point average, the 18-year-old had been accepted to Georgetown University as part of its Class of 2022.
But he had left his parents’ house in February after they had given him an ultimatum to attend their church, after years of disagreements related to his sexuality - Owen is gay - or move out, he told NBC News. And Georgetown’s financial aid package for him had been calculated based on what his family was expected to contribute, leaving him with a $20,000 gap to pay the tuition for his first year.

Sensible parents-last time I checked, 18 is the age one is legally an adult, responsible for themselves-parents are not obligated to provide them with a damn thing -and if they don’t want a son who won’t go to church and is a homosexual living in their home any more-hell, it is their home-and those are their rules-like it or leave...
I hardly believe he thinks its a bad decision with 114K towards what would have been loans. His lessons will be later in life.

Another one who did not read the article. He was kicked out of the house in February....graduated in June. Last I knew parents did typically support their kid through graduation from High School.

So, have your son declare a new sexuality, feign disagreement, have him move out of the house (which he’d be doing anyway right to go to college), he posts to the interwebs, and boom — free college.

Actually I did and my comment had nothing to do with when he graduated/was kicked out-it had to do with the fact that legally speaking, parents are not responsible for a child once they are 18, whether they are in high school, have a job and work full time or are working on an advanced degree at a university-they are legally an adult-it has nothing to do with what parents “typically do” or don’t do-it is their choice.
On these go fund me deals, is there any kind of tax issue? He keeps the whole amount? Does the go fund me website keep a percentage of the total? Just curious.
