The American couple murdered in an ISIS-claimed car attack in Tajikistan quit their office jobs last year and were in the midst of pursuing their lifelong dream of cycling around the world when they were killed.
Jay Austin and Lauren Geoghegan, both 29 and living in Washington, DC, chronicled their adventures on a blog called Simply Cycling where they wrote that theyd decided to take on the globe on two wheels, because life is short and the world is big and we want to make the most of our youth and good health before theyre gone.

sorry for this couple but it was extremely naive/foolish/insane to travel about in such places....
what's wrong with biking to Alaska?
“If youre on your dream vacation to places like Tajikistan, and you cant afford an armed division to protect you. Expect just about anything.”
I travelled the world internationally on business. In retirement I travel for pleasure only the US or Canada and I stay outside the cities. There is more beauty and goodness to explore and appreciate in this country than one can see in a lifetime.
Why risk one’s life unnecessarily in any “stan” country when you can spend decades wandering through public lands in the US where you have more chance of being injured by the animals living there than people? Plus you are exposed to wonderful and interesting people outside the urban areas, particularly if you stay in campgrounds and not roadside motels.
This is the only thing from the article need to know.
He was just a gentle soul who cared about the world and not leaving any footprint and leaving it a better place, she said in an interview on Tuesday.
The estrogen and soy must have really emanated from this guy.
Trust fund babies.
I was thinking the same thing.
I have some very basic requirements for life.
My husband and three of our children are on a week-long kayaking trip right now. Nice for them, but I don’t have the slightest interest, although I enjoy kayaking for a couple of hours.
That jumped out to me also. Fine that he was a gentle soul. But at the time of the attack, what they needed were some freaking violent alpha males to deal with their attackers.
I read it more so that he was naive to the point of being stupid.
Why in the hell would you go to as place as that?
Good grief.
Agreed.
I’m trying to muster some sympathy for these nitwits, but I can’t.
They were almost certainly leftists. And leftists have made it plain they want us normal folks either dead or reduced to serfdom.
So, why should I offer fake sympathy for people who would have despised me and all I believe?
High on the creepy scale.
The sad fact is that such a thing could happen even in Paris, these days.
Dream. Exactly. Childish fantasy.
Thinking is very difficult for them. They spent their lives emoting not thinking and it cut their life short!
Are you sure this couple wasn’t CIA? really sure?
Until you provide proof they were CIA, they ain’t. I don’t play childish games. “If” is for children.
I remember years ago, reading of another couple who quit their jobs, and decided to travel Africa, North to South by motorcycle. They also never made it out alive.
A few years ago a FReeper wrote of a time in the late 90’s when he worked in England. A female in the office said that she and her mother were going to go on “holiday” and take a walking tour of Africa. She showed him the areas where they were going and he and many others told them not to go. Long story short, they went on “holiday” and have never been seen again.
Avoid Kafiristan, too.
