Warner Bros. Television is in the early stages of developing a reboot of the classic sitcom ALF, Variety has confirmed with sources.
No writer is yet attached to the project, which would again explore the misadventures of the titular, cat-eating ALFwhich stands for Alien Life Form. In the original series, ALF of the planet Melmac crash lands in the suburbs and takes up residence with the middle class Tanner family. The show aired from 1986-1990 for four seasons and over 100 episodes on NBC. The series has remained a part of the pop culture landscape long after it ended and is frequently referenced in other shows and films.
One idea that has reportedly been discussed for the reboot would involve ALF emerging from Area 51where he has been held captive since the original series finaleand observing how much the world has changed since that time.
Warner Bros. TV declined to comment.
ALF was created by Paul Fusco and Tom Patchett, with Fusco also serving as the puppeteer and voice behind ALF onscreen. The series also starred Max Wright, Anne Schedeen, Andrea Elson, and Benji Gregory.
This marks the latest classic series to get eyed for a reboot. Most recently, it was reported that Kelsey Grammer was meeting with writers to discuss a potential reboot of Frasier, in which Grammer starred throughout that shows entire 11-season run. Grammer originated the character on another classic sitcom, Cheers.
TVLine first reported the ALF reboots development.
Lol! Although I never saw Alf, I fully get what you’re saying. Even the cartoons suck horribly today, last 30-40 years. Same with popular music, cars, clothes styles, and just about everything else. Damn shame.
Most of the time they used a puppet run by Paul Fusco but in some shots including in the opening credit sequence, a dwarf (Michu of circus fame) played him, running, etc.
Cast members complained of the long days when they had to work through all the setups etc.
Wiki:
>>Due to the inherent nature of producing a show featuring hand-operated puppets (à la Jim Henson’s The Muppet Show), ALF was technically difficult and demanding on series creator Fusco as well as its four lead actors. All confirmed during a 2006 People magazine interview that there were high levels of tension on the set.[9] Max Wright stated that he despised supporting a technically demanding inanimate object that received most of the good lines of dialog. He admitted to being “hugely eager to have ALF over with.”[9]
>>Artie Lange, who later worked with Wright on The Norm Show, told of a time when Wright had become “crazed” and attacked ALF, causing producers to have to pull Wright off the puppet.[10] Anne Schedeen added that on the last night of taping, “there was one take and Max walked off the set, went to his dressing room, got his bags, went to his car and disappeared... There were no goodbyes.” Schedeen herself said “there was no joy on the set...it was a technical nightmare extremely slow, hot and tedious... A 30-minute show took 20, 25 hours to shoot.” While fond of her on-screen children, Schedeen said some adults had “difficult personalities. The whole thing was a big dysfunctional family.” Schedeen added, “It’s astonishing that ALF really was wonderful and that word never got out what a mess our set really was.”[9] Andrea Elson, who suffered from bulimia during the second season of shooting, stated, “If ALF had gone one more year, everybody would have lost it.”[9] Wright did later concede, though, that “It doesn’t matter what I felt or what the days were like, ALF brought people a lot of joy.”[9]
Jeff Sessions can play Granny! DOPELGANGER!
The Beverly Hillbillies movie SUCKED!
Started this long trend of Hollywood destroying all of the old TV shows I used to enjoy.
Only funny bit was when Buddy Ebsen made a cameo appearance.
As Barnaby Jones.
ALF as a transgendered black space lesbian with superpowers, anybody want to place bets on that?
Four words for you:
Lancelot Link, Secret Chimp
They have one left: anti-conservative communism.
Wow....if I was a teenager again, a remake of ALF might interest me...
