A Rock Band Flirts with German Taboos, and Finds a Huge Following

NATZ, Italy — By the time Frei.Wild took the stage at Alpen Flair, a three-day music festival in northern Italy, the sun had disappeared behind the forested peaks of the surrounding Alps. Most of the 20,000 audience members had traveled over 100 miles from Germany to see the band. The crowd was overwhelmingly white and largely male, and many fans shouted along as the band launched into one of its most controversial songs, “Südtirol.”

The song celebrates Frei.Wild’s home region of South Tyrol, where the festival was taking place, a largely German-speaking enclave that was passed to Italy from Austria-Hungary after World War I. “I won’t tolerate any criticism of this sacred land, our homeland,” the band’s heavily tattooed singer, Philipp Burger, sang. An eagle like the one on the region’s flag flashed on a large screen onstage.

Frei.Wild (pronounced FRY-vilt) has become one of the most contentious and successful bands in Germany, where its lyrics about loving one’s homeland have resonated with people who want to challenge the postwar taboo against public expressions of national pride. The band sings in German, and its music is a punk-inflected variant of “deutschrock,” a form of German rock music. But a South Tyrolean identity allows the group to voice nationalist sentiments in German, for a largely German audience, while partly avoiding the backlash that a German band would encounter for making similar statements.

The band’s most recent album, “Rivalen und Rebellen,” (“Rivals and Rebels”) went to the top of the German-language charts in Germany and Austria this spring, and it is the second best-selling album in any language in Germany this year. Many of the group’s tour dates, which included stadium audiences as large as 12,000 people, were sold out.

where its lyrics about loving one’s homeland

You know the world's values system has been turned completely upside-down and inside-out when loving one's homeland is considered controversial. It used to be the expected norm for people to love their countries and cultures.

Of course, the real attitude of the elites seems to be that white Europeans with patriotic attitudes are evil, while Third World peoples and their descendants are encouraged to be ultra-nationalists (even though most of them seem to want nothing more than the flee their beloved homelands).

If they start singing about “Danzig” they’re going to have a fight on their hands.

The irony is, before Hitler, Germany was arguably one of the least anti-semitic countries in Europe, many Jews fought for the Kaiser in WWI.

“including Jews “who hold the strings” in the United States — to keep Germany from being economically successful.””

Wow, not even original conspiracy theories. This one was originally generated by Erich Ludendorff who blamed Jews for his disastrous leadership that caused Germany to fail in WWI.

It was picked up by Hitler while recuperating from a gas attack in hospital when the Armistice was signed -— and he ran with it — making this very conspiracy theory the center of Mein Kamph.

Shame they won’t look to their own failed socialist policies and the importation of savages as the source of their problems.

It’s a main check point towards one world government, the destruction of NATIONALISM

I think that the reason why internationalist elites support Third World nationalism while opposing the nationalism of developed nations is that the nationalism of the Third World is no threat to them: no Sub-Saharan African, Arab, or Central American country will ever wield substantial military or economic power. So why not encourage their nationalism as a tool against now-emasculated western nations, whose nationalism would be potential threat to the power of international alphabet agencies and transnational corporations? And if Third World racial chauvinism can be combined with mass immigration, all the better for the elites.

The elitists know they cannot defeat nationalism by confronting it directly.

Therefor they must dilute its strength by importing millions of non-nationals to the countries in question to make it weaker and weaker until it is seen as an abomination like ‘slavery’................

Most European nationalist parties don't say or care much about Jews one way or another, partly because Jews are a negligible fraction of the population in most European countries, and their cultural influence is virtually nil.

Almost all European nationalist parties focus their rhetoric and energy on opposing mass immigration from the Middle East and Africa (ironically, it is those immigrants, and not European nationalists, who are responsible for most if not all recent attacks on Jews in Europe). Unfortunately, the mass media always latches on to some raving skinhead-type as the alleged posterboy for European nationalist party, as opposed to the patriotic, reasonable people who make up 99% of them.

I have no idea what this band is, what their songs are about etc, but the article reveals a big lie about Nazis. The nazi party was “nationist” but that wasn’t what made them evil. Nationalist is synonymous with patriotic after all. What made them evil was socialism. The term “National” in national socialist German workers party was really to define them as not being an internationalist movement as was popular amongst the communist/socialist of the time. Of course then they tried to conquer the world...but one can’t expect logical consistency from mad men.

Hitler, et al, have used the ‘Jews are the problem!’ because it is politically easy to take a people that are hurting economically and focus their hate on someone else. The Jews were an easy target.

It was going on centuries before........................and continues to do so..............

South Tyrol should be part of Austria.

Europe still retains a lot of artificial boundaries as relics of the Austro-Hungarian empire and other long-gone political entities. The existence of Walloon+Flemish Belgium (a relic going back still further, to the Spanish Inquisition's rule of the southern Netherlands) never made much sense either.

Nationalism, is about respecting other nations. The Nazis didn’t respect nations or borders, they wanted to rule all of Europe. They were the “original EU”.

A lot of Germans don't believe anything. They're asleep while teeming hordes who despise German culture swarm in, intent on conquering and reshaping the old foe, Europe. Germans shrug and say "ah well, diversity."

For the minority that don't, that actually love their country, this Jew stuff is unfortunately par for the course. The right in Europe permeated with Identity Evropa stuff. Even a lot of Nordic paganism -- Christianity is just Judaism in disguise to some of these people. As Europe destabilizes more and more, we're going to have to decide where people of that ilk fall on the "enemy of my enemy of my friend" spectrum...Because if Europe doesn't collapse into a caliphate, it's going to be an alt-right haven with these same undertones of Wodanism and antisemitism. I don't see a realistic alternative to one or the other of these scenarios emerging after an indefinite period of Zimbabwe-style mediocrity.

That said, the animus is largely misdirected but not entirely unfounded. An Italian once told me that British and American Catholics are too reverential to the pope and cardinals, that Europeans closer to the center of affairs have a clearer view of how decidedly those in clerical power don't deserve respect. A lot of big leftwing movers and shakers in Europe are Jewish, due to dynamics going way back. This isn't always immmediately apparent to Americans but when Europeans talk about strings being pulled by "the Jews" they're (usually) not talking about Moishe down the street, but the Jewish bigwigs who are behind a lot of the crap going on in Europe. Same thing when people say "the church" pulled this or that leftwing stunt on our southern border, but what they mean is not Catholics in gener but Marxist cardinals and bishops.

The irony is that Stalin, was also a “National Socialist”, in that he rejected Lenin and Trotsky’s “Internationalism” in favor of “Socialism in One Country” with the Russians the “Master Race” (although Stalin himself was Georgian). He ordered the “Russification” of the entire Soviet Union, replaced native populations with ethnic Russians in the most prosperous regions.

Compare with Poland, which right now has hundreds of thousands of people in Warsaw ready to commemorate “Godzina W”, the start of the 1944 Warsaw Uprising.

I read an account by a German OrderPolizie who was part of one of the first Judenakton in Poland. He was assigned to take an older man into the forest and shoot him. He found that the guy was German, not Polish, and a highly decorated veteran of WW1.

Still shot him, but apparently felt a little bad about it.

Stalin believed in establishing "socialism in one country" rather than prioritizing world revolution, but he was not an ethno-nationalist of any kind ideologically.

The reason Stalin Russified Soviet Republics was not because he believed in a Russian "master race" to rule over Central Asian or Baltic peoples, but because he wanted to replace the ethno-national identities of these Republics with a generic, Russian-speaking "Soviet Man" with only a Soviet/Communist identity. It would be equivalent to Brussels making English (or Esperanto, while they're at it) the official language of the EU to suppress the individual identities of European countries.
