One thing I know is that if you spend a lot of time
around grandkids who have not had the chicken pox you
should not get it, as it contains live virus.

I had shingles 4 years ago. I got the impression back then that if one is exposed to kids with active cases of chicken pox every few years, after having it yourself, then that exposure inoculates you against shingles.
Since most kids are now inoculated against chicken pox, few adults are ever re-exposed to it. That makes them vulnerable to getting shingles. Just my impression.
