American troops deployed in Syria are increasingly having to defend themselves against Russian jamming deviceselectronic attacks with potentially lethal consequences, according to U.S. military officials and analysts.
Officers who have experienced the jammingknown as electronic warfaresay its no less dangerous than conventional attacks with bombs and artillery. But they also say its allowing U.S. troops a rare opportunity to experience Russian technology in the battlefield and figure out how to defend against it.
Its a great opportunity for us to operate particularly in the Syrian environment where the Russians are active.
Daniel Goure, an expert on national security and military issues at the Lexington Institute, says Russias new electronic warfare systems are sophisticated. They can be mounted on large vehicles or aircraft and can impair targets hundreds of miles away.
The trouble with electronic warfare broadly speaking is it can really screw with your picture of the battle space, your operating picture, and that can lead to really horrendous mistakes, Goure said.
This is escalatory. There is no question about it, Goure said.
The U.S. campaign in Syria targets the Islamic State. But U.S. troops have occasionally had contact with Russian forces. Russian aircraft frequently fly within close range of U.S. fighter jets, with one near-collision occurring last December. And U.S. troops in February engaged in a bloody four-hour battle against pro-regime forces in eastern Syria, including private Russian mercenaries.
Analysts say Russia is increasingly using Syria as a testing ground for new electronic weapons, which Moscow developed over the past 10 to 15 years in response to NATOs dominance in conventional weaponry. Operations in Ukraine offered Moscow a similar opportunity to use these new systems in combat.

Easy Fix. Leave. Not our war
Historically reminiscent of the Spanish Civil War. Germany and Russia evaluated their weapon systems and tactics during that war.
Why would the USA have combat troops inside Syria?!
To try to keep Iran as far from Israel’s borders as possible?
Exactly
BTW I thought Trump was going to disengage us from the quagmire.
To protect the anti-Assad Kurds and other minorities from annihilation, plus to check Russian expansion into the region, which would cause more wars there.
Not a lot to do directly with Israel. They same to be handling the Syrians, Iranians and Hezbollah on their own.
Drop the anti-Semitism and get with the real program, stopping Russian aggression and subversion.
You’re beginning to sound a lot like the Democrats and “Russian collusion”. Not a very fitting posture for a Freeper.
Why would the USA have combat troops inside Syria?!
//
funny, it was Obama who sent troops there. but russophobe nuts tried to make it look like a Trump’s grand design.
you are supposed to send a big thank you letter to Obama for sending troops there.
We had to destroy Syria to save it eh.
Whatever works!
What actually works is not being involved in Middle Eastern wars at all.
Whatever works!

it has already worked. America has got several thousands Syrian refugees.
I don’t remember Congress declaring war on Syria.
Are we just going to label everyone we dislike “terrorists” and have endless, undeclared wars whenever we desire, instead?
I was going to comment on the illiterate headline writer, but I see it’s been fixed at the site.
Russian Jamming Poses a Growing Threat to U.S. Troops in Syria
Assad isn’t the threat to the other minorities. He’s been their protector. It’s the Jihadists we supported who are. As for the Kurds, Turkey is the real threat to them, and they’re supposedly our allies. Erdogan’s worse than Assad.
None of it’s enough for us to be there. Our job was to destroy ISIS. Time to declare victory and go home.
I think Trumps just letting it play out and we have little to do with any of it pretty much. Interesting that Erdogan, Rouhanni and Putin are again meeting in Sochi developing the agreements...neithr Assad nor any US representative there.
Now why should Erdogan have anything to do with settling these agreements? Obvious he’s been routing the Jihadists through Turkey from the get go.....and they know it or he wouldn’t be there.
Yep, with the likely objective of protecting his ISIS brothers from the Russians making mincemeat of them.
Meaconing, intrusion, and jamming are deliberate actions intended to deny an enemy the effective use of the electromagnetic spectrum. ... Collectively, meaconing, intrusion, jamming, and interference incidents are referred to as MIJI incidents. We are firmly on top of Electronic Countermeasures and Electronic Counter Countermeasures.
